Lambeth and Veolia: looking back over 2018/19 Contamination of dry recycling still a challenge Contamination of comingled recycling in 2017/18 – 3,276 tonnes Contamination of comingled recycling in 2018/19 – 3,338 tonnes (est) Action by Veolia to tackle the problem • We have analysed contamination data in detail every month • We have identified which neighbourhoods are worst affected • Contamination of dry recycling is mostly by food waste and non- recyclable plastics • Crews and new employees briefed on spotting and reporting • Targeted interventions – door-knocking in worst affected neighbourhoods • Partnering with Street Champions on peer to peer advice

Lambeth and Veolia: looking back over 2018/19 To increase recycling we need to collect food waste Western Riverside Waste Authority waste composition analysis Oct 2018 found • 36.2% ‘ putrescibles ’ in Lambeth’s kerbside waste, plus • 4.5% garden waste Action by Veolia • Borough-wide project started in March 2019 to promote food waste collection • Over 1,000 caddies requested by residents in just 3 weeks

  13. Lambeth and Veolia: looking back over 2018/19 Main operational projects • We rolled out the electric Mechanical Sweepers, and tested the new sweeping schedules • Veolia recruited an extra Environmental Manager at its own cost, and completed its £150,000 investment in additional Town Centre cleansing resources • We designed new Google inspection sheets to ensure EMs check that flytips are cleared • We are ready for the Ultra Low Emission Zone, starting 1 April 2019

Lambeth and Veolia: looking back over 2018/19 Main community engagement projects • Environment Forum held November 2018 • Food waste collection trial - 23% increase in participation • Engaged with over 1,000 residents at Roadshow events • Recycling competitions at Lambeth Country Show • Targeted interventions to reduce contamination • Flats above shops trial – ready to roll out borough-wide • Promoting recycling on housing estates • Deterring flytipping in hotspots • 74 new Street Champions, increasingly from Brixton • 61 Freshview events – involving over 500 residents • Continued support for Snow Wardens

  15. Lambeth and Veolia: looking ahead to 2019/20 Priorities for operations • Put the new street cleansing schedules ‘live’ on ECHO • Maintain the deep cleansing programme, and keep local Councillors briefed when their roads are done • Partnership with enforcement to tackle flytipping hotspots • Agree with the Council how to comply with much tighter Low Emission Zone standards across Greater London, from October 2020

Lambeth and Veolia: looking ahead to 2019/20 Priorities for community engagement • Heavy promotion of kerbside food waste recycling • Reduce contamination of recyclate (see above) • Encourage recycling from flats above shops • Apply best practice lessons to encourage recycling from estates • Use new print and digital media to promote recycling • Work with local communities to tackle grot spots • Support community groups trying to reduce single use plastics • Hold another Environment Forum • Promote bulky waste service take-up • Hold a Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment event • Refresh the signage in timed collection zones • Print and distribute the Welcome Pack

Corporate Social Responsibility - Veolia’s local initiatives • Wide range of apprenticeships available to local residents • Socially inclusive recruitment – Blue Sky, Shaw Trust, ex-forces • Improving air quality – electric vehicles; cycle to work scheme • Promoting healthy eating – spin-offs from TRiFOCAL project • Roadshows discouraging single-use plastics Veolia’s Recycling Fund for Communities – recent local projects • Monthly Thames beach litter picks • Sports Fusion tournaments – plastic free • We refurbished land near Gipsy Hill station • We provided benches made from recycled plastic for older residents on an estate in Norwood

Corporate Social Responsibility - Veolia’s national initiatives • Testing electric refuse collection vehicles in Sheffield, Westminster and the City of London • Major corporate push to reduce accidents at work • Founder member of the global Alliance to End Plastic Waste – over $1billion investment commitment over next 5 years • 150 employees trained as Mental Health First Aiders • National careline (‘ Carefirst ’) to support employees through personal difficulties
