BACKGROUND INFORMATION

➢ July 2015: NHS England transferred the management and administration

  • f primary care interpreting services across Lambeth, Southwark and

Lewisham (LSL) to NHS Lewisham CCG. ➢ The contract covers Lewisham, Lambeth and Southwark (LSL). ➢ Lewisham CCG is the lead commissioner and manages it on behalf of all three CCGs* ➢ The service is for primary care health care services (GPs, Dentists, Optometrists) as well as BPAS and Marie Stopes

*CCGs buy, monitor and plan health services for local people. This is known as commissioning. They are responsible for making sure that local people get the most accessible and effective healthcare services possible. The CCGs need to make sure that the services we commission meet the needs of our patients, are good quality and offer value for money.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

➢ The interpreting and translation service helps people communicate with their doctor or nurse if they do not speak English. ➢ We know that lot of other languages are spoken across Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham ➢ All languages requested in the last two years have been met by the current service ➢ The service is not a health advocacy service

EQUALITY IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA) ➢ An EIA of the current service has identified areas of inequality with regards to access for different groups of users that access the service. ➢ Commissioners wish to understand these areas of inequalities in more detail NATIONAL FRAMEWORK ➢NHS England published guidance for commissioning interpreting and translation services in health care (September 2018) ➢Commissioners aim to ensure that the interpreting and translation service it commissions meets the national requirements

younger population than the national average. ➢ LSL is a richly diverse area, with patients from numerous cultural and ethnic backgrounds who rely

  • n this support to access

healthcare. ➢ The growth in population across LSL means extra demand for health services. ➢ Commissioners need to be aware

  • f any changing demand for

languages to keep services accessible. ➢ To make services increasingly equitable it is crucial to be aware of any inequalities that currently exist.
