 GCE O LEVEL: General Certificate of Secondary Education (UK)  Runs from September 2016 – November 2017

WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN MAKING CHOICES

When discussing option choices, remember the following:

 Choose subjects that you most enjoy.  Don’t choose subjects based on your friends or your current teacher  Ensure your subject combinations are challenging but manageable.  Ensuring that subject choices keep your options open and don’t close doors

for your future (languages / Sciences etc.)

SUBJECT SELECTION SUMMARY

 All students must select six subjects from the option blocks when published

later this term.

 Math & English are compulsory for all students.  Malay is compulsory for Malaysian students.

LANGUAGE SELECTION- MANDARIN

There are four options:

 Mandarin- Second Language  Mandarin as a Foreign Language  YCT (Youth Chinese Test) offered by Hanban  HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) offered by Hanban

Second Language v/s Foreign Language– the main difference is proficiency of writing skills

LANGUAGE SELECTION- FRENCH

 Students selecting French as a MFL should have been doing the subject for

2-3 years previously for IGCSE French as a second language.

 French native speakers maybe prepared & presented for IGCSE French as a

first language.

 Alternate qualification in French for beginners from Alliance Francaise is

mainly for students who have not studied French for 2-3 years in Year 7-9- Delf A1 junior is a French ministry of Education certificate recognized internationally.

LANGUAGE SELECTION- ARABIC

Students maybe presented for any 2 or all of the levels stated below:

 IGCSE MFL PAPER 2 Reading (33% weightage)- CORE  IGCSE MFL PAPER 3 Speaking (33% weightage)- COMPULSORY  IGCSE MFL PAPER 4 Writing (33% weightage)- EXTENDED

In some instances, if the Language Teachers feel that a student is ready to be presented for the IGCSE as early as in Y9 or 10 they may register them as early entries in the following subjects:
