slide-27
SLIDE 27
  • GCSE Maths has become more demanding
  • Greater focus on problem-solving.
  • Requirement to provide clear mathematical

arguments.

  • Limited formulae provided. Students expected

to remember them!

  • More challenging content has been added to

foundation and higher tiers

What can you do to help?

  • Know your child’s target grade
  • Be positive & supportive
  • Help them to organise themselves
  • Get your child to explain
  • Ensure they complete their homework
slide-30
SLIDE 30
  • Talk about numbers
  • Real life situations: shopping, offers, best buys, interest

rates, commission payments, bills

  • Mental maths: the more automatic responses that a

candidate can accurately recall the better

  • Discuss problem solving strategies: drawing diagrams,

underlining important facts and reading questions carefully can all help

  • Does their answer make sense? Estimating as a

checking strategy is useful

  • Encourage daily revision, 10 – 15 minutes recapping a

topic they have learnt in class.

COMPLETE HOMEWORK

The time students spend in maths lessons alone is not sufficient time to achieve a pass at GCSE. Independent study at home is essential for achieving success.

  • Homework set every week.
  • Designed to reinforce content learnt in lessons.
  • Sufficient time always given to enable students to ask

teacher for help if needed.

  • Contact made with home if homework is not regularly

completed.

  • Homework will be recorded on ‘Show My Homework’.
slide-32
SLIDE 32

Progress, Monitoring and Contact

  • Homework
  • Past exam Papers available for independent study
  • Regular assessment of strengths and areas of weakness
  • Intervention sessions
  • Progress monitored by teacher through regular

assessments, class work and homework

  • Regular Data Captures

We are a team of 9 Maths teachers who are always ready to help! Contacting your child’s teacher – email is preferable in the first instance

IMPORTANCE OF A MATHS GCSE

In 2017, 29.3% of students ad to re-sit their GCSE Maths – this is approximately 40,000 nationwide. If you do not achieve a grade 4 or above in Maths at GCSE you will be required, by law to continue with your maths education at College Some employers are now looking for a Grade 5. Some sixth forms may say you can’t do a particular subject unless you’ve got at least a grade 6 or 7 in Maths at GCSE. If your Maths grade is below a 4 studying A-levels could be off limits altogether; a sixth form may offer you a vocational (i.e. a more practical and hands-on) course – you will still need to study maths in addition to this. Regardless of the subject, you want to study at University the majority of university courses look for at least a grade 5 in Maths

slide-34
SLIDE 34

Recap …

slide-40
SLIDE 40

The importance of practical

  • Over the course of the GCSE students

have to carry out a large number of required practicals (28 for Triple, 21 for Combined)

  • Questions about these activities will make

up 10% of the GCSE

  • Missing lessons will have a BIG impact on

this!

slide-41
SLIDE 41

The importance of maths

  • 10% of questions of Biology papers are

Maths based

  • 20% of questions in Chemistry papers are

Maths based

  • 30% of questions in Physics are Maths

based

  • This is a positive thing – it means you have

at least 10 lessons a week to improve your skills!

slide-42
SLIDE 42

The importance of memory

  • 40% of the questions on each of the

papers are based on recall

  • On top of learning content all students

are also expected to learn and recall 23 Physics equations (including units)

  • It is extremely important that you focus
  • n your recall skills
slide-43
SLIDE 43

What do I need to do to get into Triple Science?

  • To be chosen for Triple Science you must be in
  • ne of the top sets
  • There are 3 more opportunities to change sets

before the decision is made

  • Set changes are based on layered assessments
  • Dates for assessments will be sent home along

with revision lists, resources and dates of in school revision opportunities

slide-44
SLIDE 44

What the school are doing

knowledgeable and legendary Science teachers

  • Setting homework each week on

www.showmyhomework.co.uk

  • Homework includes recall quizzes, write

ups of required practicals, preparation readings and tutorials to watch

If you look at something once you will forget it If you revise it time and time again, you will remember it This next three years will go quickly– work hard and enjoy!
