Revision Evening 2019 GCSE Science

Mr Clayton - Year 10

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Why now?

 Science GCSE has never been harder!  Science is now a 2 year linear course with no

coursework.

 Pupils need to consolidate work throughout the

  • course. There is simply not enough time to

“cram” at the end.

 Year 10 contains approximately 70% of the total

content.

 Good habits now make Year 11 so much easier.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

What is available for my child to revise?

The Science department gives many ways

for a pupil to revise and consolidate their knowledge and learning.

1.Bought Revision guides. These are £5 for

combined and £9 for those sitting Triple

  • Science. These can be bought through

school or from other book shops (where the price increases).

slide-16
SLIDE 16

What is available for my child to revise?

1.Teacher produced revision guides. Free and

available electronically.

2.The Year 11 Personal Intervention

Programme on the School shared

  • documents. This contains all revision guides

(discussed later) and also at least one, 2 to 4 minute video, on each lesson in the whole

  • f key stage 4 (discussed later)

Revision Guides +1

As discussed before there are different

revision guides for different learners.

1.Large guides which map directly to the

national curriculum programme of study.

2.Pixl Study mats for the information condensed

to 30 sides of A4 in a very structured way.

3.Absolute basics on 6 sides of A4 which if

learned completely should allow the pupil to get a basic pass in Science.

slide-19
SLIDE 19
slide-20
SLIDE 20

Revision Guides +2

1.Progress questions indicators 2.100’s of past paper questions directed

towards the individual units, all with answers.

3.PowerPoints of every single lesson taught

  • ver the 2 year course
slide-21
SLIDE 21

Where do I find all this?

 On the shared pupil documents.  Via the website at Philipshigh.co.uk/moodle  Via your “show my homework” inbox. All of the info, apart

from the videos, have been sent this evening. This is specific for year 10 . You will be sent the information required for the whole of KS4 in November.

 If your child informs you they don’t have any work to do,

there are hundreds of question on these portals including all worksheets that are used in lessons (just in case they lose it!)

slide-22
SLIDE 22

In closing

I hope you feel that the Science

department is supporting you and your child in these very stressful years, but with early intervention and working together we hope you will find the next 12 months both challenging and rewarding.

ICT

Btec Digital In Information Technology

60% internally marked coursework – externally moderated by exam board. 40% final theory exam at the end of Y11. This year the pupils have been working on learning the practical skills required to complete the two coursework tasks. These must be completed by October next year. As a result of this there is no revision possible at this point and the end of year 10 exam will be held until next year. Textbooks will be available closer to the time so they don’t get lost.

Computer Science

Coursework has been removed from the qualification, programming skills are now tested solely in the summer exams. To practice these skills all pupils should have Python installed on their home computers, tablets etc. (it’s free!) If this is not possible time should be spent in homework club using the software installed in school. YouTube has lots of very good tutorials from beginner to expert. Many websites have practice tasks with example solutions – coding.bat is one we use in school so pupils should be familiar with it.

Computer Science

Textbooks are currently on order and should be around £3, these will be made available as soon as they arrive in school. Pupils have been provided with printed textbook chapters to support each unit, these should be kept and used to create revision materials. Revision templates for completion, past papers and an electronic textbook are available from the Computer Science folder on the school network and can be copied onto pen-drives etc. (this can also be accessed via the network from home). Additional revision materials and links will be made available via SMHW as

  • necessary. Avoid Bitesize etc. unless specifically instructed to visit as it caters for ALL exam

boards meaning much of the work is irrelevant.
