Revised Option 5

  • Following on from the initial design options the

preferred option has been developed further

  • Improving Ingram’s Well Lane provides a right

turn from Great Eastern Road to Newton Road

  • This simplifies the junction / roundabout option

further

  • This would provide a easier crossing for cyclists

and pedestrians and be less detrimental to traffic capacity

Ingram’s Well Lane

  • Ingram’s Well Lane would be signalised at the

junction with Newton Road to enable traffic to turn right

  • This would also include Chelsea Road as a

staggered crossroad

  • It would be one way northbound
  • Some parking would be permitted
  • Footway enhanced at north end

Next Steps

  • We have had initial discussions with the traffic

modelling specialists

  • They are proposing an iterative approach to

refining the geometry in parallel with the traffic impact assessment

  • This stage will take 2-3 months
  • They are going to concentrate on the 5b
  • ption initially as this is likely to be the most

deliverable

Shared Space Approach

  • Not one approach
  • Jan Gehl – shared surface with no delineation
  • Ben Hamilton-Baillie - shared carriageway with

separate pedestrian areas.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Key Factors

  • Low Speeds – typically less than 20mph
  • Gateways ahead of area to introduce drivers

to the shared space

  • High level of pedestrian and cycle movements
  • Easy to understand for all users

Considerations

  • Treatment on approach
  • Two different styles
  • Speeds in area
  • Impact – congestion
  • Cyclists
slide-19
SLIDE 19

Data Comparison

  • Traffic flows

– Poynton = 27,000 – Shoreditch = 4,800 (48% cycle)

  • Scheme Cost

– Poynton £3M – Shoreditch £500K

Other examples

  • Hamilton Rd – Felixstowe
  • Ashford - Kent
  • Seven Dials – Covent Garden
  • New Road – Brighton

The form of shared space must be sympathetic to the area and traffic and pedestrian demands
