A.1 HUMAN BEHAVIOR CHARRETE

DESCRIPTION

Build 5” x 5” boxes that convey feeling, emotion, and experiences using light, color, textures, propotion, etc.

OBJECTIVES

Create installations that evoke emotion and create a mood and understand the relationship between the guest and the interior spaces as they experience it

APPLICATION

The yellow cube inspired the colors used in the design as well as how despite having things in between you are still able to have a peak of what is happening behind the

  • bjects in between but still creating some privacy

The blue cube inspired the aquarium how the water has a certain transparency to it but creates interesting shadows with difgerent lights and how the wall creates privacy without completely secluding a space from the

A.2 ORIGINAL DESIGN OVERVIEW

COURSE INTRODUCTION DESIGN TOOLS DEVELOPMENTS DESCRIPTION

Identify design principles and elements of study image and pick three additional inspiration images related to the study image. Develop DNA words for each image and from there come up with a design concept. Use all

  • f these to develop a physical 3-D model out of only a

list of materials given.

OBJECTIVES

Understand plagiarism and how to translate a design inspiration into an original work. Stay in the line between inspiration and plagiarism in the fjnished work.

APPLICATION

Color scheme came from this images as well as the use

  • f difgerent textures to create contrast. The linear shape
  • f the aquarium wall guides your eye towards where to

go once you enter the house. Emphasis was created through contrasting textures and colors. Repetition and layaring show in the pergola in the outside as well as the repetition in colors and textures.

CONCLUSION AND DESIGN GUIDELINES

CONCLUSIONS

Little space on the second fmoor Not enough natural light coming in on the second fmoor Unconventional placement of stairs Lots of entrances/thresholds in the property Possible noise from future construction next door and from the boat traffjc as well as the hotel a few houses down There isn’t a specifjc place for parking Only one road to get in and out of the island Lots of natural light coming into the house Lots of places for difgerent activities nearby Located in an evacuation zone during hurricane season as well as a fmood zone Bus stops nearby

OBJECTIVES

Arrange rooms in a way that takes advantage of every corner Make sure that rooms and offjces get the most natural light possible and increase the amount of light by using artifjcial light Make the rooms around the stairs and use the other space as a hall Strategically place rooms so they work together with thresholds Use noise cancelling windows as well as landscape to help redirect the noise Guests can park on the street side or enter the house and park in their driveway, owners have a parking garage for 2 cars There are taxi boats to help transportation as well as plenty of buses and a sidewalk where you can bike or walk or even run Use blinds as well as other elements such as a pergola to create shading both inside and out Hurricane proof the house: thicker doors, fortify the garage door, strengthen the rood materials to keep the house from collapsing, concrete walls, etc)

A.5 PROGRAM DEFINITION

PROFILING AND RESIDENTIAL HOME PROGRAM ANALYSIS

Create a group presentation with an introduction, analysis of the building and conclusions.

DESIGN GUIDELINES

Understand how natural and man-made systems may afgect the design of the spaces. Identify source of heat gain in the interior as a result of directional position and window placement. Identify characteristics of the building that help identify possible public and private zones, structural systems and spatial quality.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

A single family home located in an urban residential area for a young, married couple. They are a fashion driven power couple who work all day during the week and relax with their friends over the weekend. They each need an offjce space to work after hours and store their fjles and

  • projects. They host their friends over all the time, so a large space

to be with them would be required. They need lots of storage for clothes, fjles, drinks, etc. Michael loves cooking so a big kitchen area would be ideal. Abigail loves to read and do yoga outdoors so, a calm and quiet space would be appropriate for her. Little Alfred loves to dress up and play around therefore, he would need a closet of his own. Michael is Irish and he likes to go back to his roots and drink Irish whiskey and beer and Abigael is English and loves to drink tea with her girls and loves wine. They each have a small collection of drinks they like.

CLIENT’S NEEDS

slide-25
SLIDE 25

The goals are to create a welcoming environment through open pub- lic spaces to have guests over and be able to create an open fmoor so everyone can interact with each other. Separation of public and pri- vate spaces is key to the design as the couple needs privacy for their work spaces to create an inclusive space that allows concentration and an environment to relax and sleep separated from the commotion that goes on in the public spaces. Another key el- ement of the house is to connect the pier and ocean to the house rather than treat it as a separate space that is being disturbed by the

  • property. Finally, the connection between certain indoor and
  • utdoor spaces is essential not only aesthetically but functionally, for

example, by connecting the kitchen area with the gardens will allow that easy access to fresh produce for cooking.

DESIGN GOALS

slide-26
SLIDE 26 Accomplishing these features is key to the design as they are factors that difgerentjate it from any other design, specially the underground aquarium and connectjon between indoors and
  • utdoors. Another unique feature is
the extreme separatjon of public vs private areas.
slide-27
SLIDE 27

CRUCIAL ASPECTS

These are some must-haves space and aspects in order for the design goals to be achieved, like the welcoming aspect of the

  • pen spaces, the connection of

indoor and outdoor through the aquarium as well as gardens and kitchen.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

ADJACENCY DIAGRAM

The larger the bubble the more important the space is. The connected bubbles mean the smaller bubbles are within the larger space.

slide-29
SLIDE 29

CONFIGURATION

Ground fmoor level analysis of the spaces and the relationship between each other. Some spaces have a stronger connection to others due to their functions and therefore need to be next to each other or have a passageway connecting them like the kitchen and gardens.

slide-30
SLIDE 30

CONFIGURATION

The master bedroom has its

  • wn closet and bathroom inside

therefore the connection between the three spaces is very strong and the connection between the studio and offjce is due to the activities done in these spaces.

slide-31
SLIDE 31

PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE

The offjce and studio require a slightly more private and quiet space and that is why they are

  • n the second fmoor and why all

the provate spaces are on the second fmoor and the guest space has privacy of its own by being completely separated from the main house. Some of the separations between public spaces aren’t done by a wall but rather by the circulation required to move around and through the

  • spaces. Spaces, like the offjce,

studio, master bedroom, kitch- en and living room require to be close to large windows in order to have the needed amount of light to create the openness the design needs to achieve.

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Keep public spaces open A door will be added to create a private circulation from the kitch- en to the gardens and outdoor dining area without having to go through the living room. As well as a private path from the kitchen to the dining room created by the stairs. An underground aquarium that goes from the street entrance and through the house (living room and dining room) all the way out to the pier, this will connect the house with the ocean view and pier. Clear separation of public and private spaces by locating them in difgerent fmoor grounds and inside and outside the house. Connection of outdoor and indoor spaces through the views from inside like the view of the garden from the kitchen and the herb garden on the window itself, and the connection of the living room to the outdoor dining area by the window that separates the two spaces but allows visibility of each other.

A.6.1 DESIGN CONCEPT

PROFILING AND RESIDENTIAL HOME DESCRIPTION

Write a concept statement addressing the main concerns of your project. Create a 30x20 board that expresses ideas about your design concept, and a 6x6 abstract model that speaks about the spatial characteristics of your project

OBJECTIVES

Identify main concerns for your project and client. Investigate spatial concept. Explore space through a board and abstract model

DESIGN GUIDELINES

Understand how natural and man-made systems may afgect the design of the spaces. Identify source of heat gain in the interior as a result of directional position and window placement. Identify characteristics of the building that help identify possible public and private zones, structural systems and spatial quality.

slide-35
SLIDE 35

BOARD AND CONCEPT STATEMENT

The purpose of the project is to create a functional space for a young couple who live in a single-family home. Located in a residential area. They need plenty of open public spaces to host their friends and plenty of storage for their work fjles and personal items. This will be achieved by creating a welcoming environment through open public spaces and completely separating the private spaces onto a separate fmoor. The house will also visually connect to the pier and ocean by an underground aquarium that will connect the street with the house and then to the pier and

  • cean. The outdoor spaces will connect to the indoors through the

views from the windows. What will make this design difgerent from

  • thers will be the aquarium embedded on the fmoor, the separation

between public and private spaces nad the connection between the

  • utdoors and indoors. The color scheme on this board will create

that next to the beach environment that creates a relaxed, open and welcoming space the Cummings desire as well as contrast from the palette with blue as an accent color. I will be using one of my A.1 cubes as an inspiration for the fmoor aquarium and my A.2 model as an inspiration for the color scheme.
