What are the risks when using ICT? How can we keep ourselves safe online? How would you answer these?
The Internet is amazing! We can go online on our TVs, computers, laptops, tablets, games consoles and mobile phones.

Risks Online
Using the Internet has become part of everyday life for many people. When we go online, we can learn things, have fun and chat to
- ur friends.
However, just like
- ther aspects of our
every day lives, using the Internet does come with some risks that we need to be aware of.
Risks Online
Using any device for a long time is not considered good for our health. When we spend a lot of time looking at a screen, it can put a lot of strain
- n our eyes and give us a headache.
We might become withdrawn from the real world and socialise with
- ur family and friends less.
This is why it is a good idea to limit screen time to between one and two hours a day.
Sometimes, we see something that upsets, worries, scares
- r confuses us.
When we use the Internet, we are unsure as to what messages, adverts, images or videos might pop up on our screen.
Risks Online
There are some things online that are not suitable for children to see. Having child restrictions on in school and at home can help prevent children seeing things they shouldn’t be seeing.
Risks Online
Sadly, online bullying, or cyberbullying, is also another risk we face when we use the Internet. Some people can be very unkind and post mean comments or threats to others on the Internet.
Sadly, online bullying, or cyberbullying, is also another risk we face when we use the Internet. Often, people decide to bully others in this way as they think it is anonymous and that they won’t get caught. This isn’t true though and you should always tell someone if this happens to you, just as you should tell someone about any form of bullying you might experience.
Let’s be friends? Hello!
Connecting to others online can be more risky than you might think. When we chat to others on the Internet, typing messages, or speaking to them through a headset, we are trusting that they are who they say they are. But do we know for sure?

Let’s be friends? Hello!
But do we know for sure? Unfortunately, not everyone can be trusted and some people might pretend to be your friend when they are not.
We can never be sure who is accessing our information and what they will do with it. Before we can delete it, someone else may have copied it or shared it. It is risky to share certain information online. Once we have posted a comment, a photo or video online, we can never really get it back.
Stranger Danger
What springs to mind when you think of the phrase ‘Stranger Danger’? There are lots of things we wouldn’t tell a stranger if they approached us in the street
- r the park.
Why shouldn’t you believe a stranger if they say they can give you a lift, help you, or show you something? What should you never tell a stranger?
Stranger Danger
The rules about strangers are just the same for when we are
- nline, as they are for when we are out and about.
We wouldn’t tell a stranger, who approached us in the street or the park our name, address, telephone number or the school we go to. We mustn’t share any personal information with a stranger online either. If an online stranger asks you for information, asks you for a photo or asks to meet up with you, you must tell a trusted adult straight away.
Remember, it is really important to speak out and tell a trusted adult, at home or at school, if we are ever concerned about something that has happened or that we have seen online. Reporting what has happened won’t mean that you are in trouble. It will mean someone can help you and report what has happened to the police, if necessary. Speak out about anything online that worries or upsets you!
There is a lot of information we need to keep safe when we use the Internet.
Staying Safe
There are things we should never share, such as our passwords, our real name,
- ur address, our school, our
age, personal photos and videos of ourselves. On your Keep It Safe Activity Sheet, draw and write about all the things you need to keep safe when using the Internet.
