Coding comments to distill information
11
Distill a large quantity of comments (~1300) Extract recommendations from the community's own words Sort into key categories
‒ Identify gaps ‒ Identify Meta-Themes
Create a framework to be able to hold against the program model and design

How we coded
Identified Activities/Uses that the comments mentioned Read each individual comment and coded for its themes (if appropriate) and the uses/activities it mentioned Called out New Ideas that comments contain
CREATE A FRAMEWORK CODE
Identified Themes in which comments could be coded under Manually entered new ideas
REPEAT
Created new categories of activities and uses based upon highly mentioned ‘new ideas’ Re-Coded + Reviewed

How did we define these terms? Natural- coded if it contained references to “natural spaces”, “restoration of environments/habitats”, “prairie, pollinators, nature”. Did not include: "open green space”
Built- coded if it included comments about more "designed" spaces or comments that specifically mentioned buildings or more substantial infrastructure. Did not include: more general references for activates and uses that would require a more designed space

THEME
COMMERCIAL / PUBLIC
RESULTS:
35 53 Commercial Public
“Our primary priority for the site is to retain public ownership of the riverfront, make it accessible through trails and recreational amenities, and to restore as much of the shoreline as possible” + Public “Permanent restaurant that draws a crowd… with food trucks or casual cafe with food for before and after shows.” + Commercial “Public space for everyone.” + Public

THEME
INDIVIDUAL / GROUP
RESULTS: “Something that involves the individual on different levels.” + Individual “..a place for people to sit, while writing, reflecting” + Individual “Places to convene and gather.” + Group “Come with friends and kick it.” + Group

THEME
ACTIVE / PASSIVE
RESULTS:
18 38 Active Passive
People need to move, sports, anything where you can move your body + Active I've always found it calming and meditative to walk along it
the trees on an small island near the park north of this
Personally, I'm not looking forward to a flashy, high use area along the river. I would hope that the area would remain park like, and not built up with homes, large restaurants or other commercial venues. + Passive
26
THEME
RIVER USE (YES/NO)
RESULTS: “River related activities boat, swim, fish, river enhanced activities, restaurants, hotels, boats rentals, bike rentals.” + River Use (yes)
94 3 Yes No
We (Northsiders) want the same things that people in other parts of Minneapolis want - beautiful spaces, access to the water, places to eat…+ River Use (yes) would stay away from the river - River Use (no)

What are the ways people want to ‘picnic’? Individual vs. group? Purchase food, cook food or bring food in? Is it safe to eat fish out of the Mississippi River? What do people mean when they say ‘natural’? Is this an open green space, a soccer field or a prairie? Should soccer, basketball and other sports be programmed or should there just be space to allow people to play? Since there were so few comments about seniors we should engage with seniors more to figure out how they would like to interact with the site. It seems like there is a desired for a mixture between a designed/natural waterfront? How should these spaces be divided? Should they be mixed or completely separate?
What is missing? What needs further exploration or detail? What needs more information?
