SLIDE 22

Scope of Work for the Project – cont’d

  • Int ersect ion at Opeongo Road
  • Currently there is no separate left turn lane for vehicles turning

from Raglan S treet onto Opeongo Road

  • This can result in vehicles queing behind the left turning vehicle

which can then impact the signalized intersection at Hall Ave. / Veterans Memorial Blvd.

  • Alternatively, vehicles pass the left turning vehicles by using the

parking lane.

  • Proposal is to introduce a dedicated left turn lane at this

intersection.

  • The existing pedestrian crossing must be moved to accommodate

the turning lane.

Scope of Work for the Project – cont’d

  • Benefits of Bumpouts
  • Creates a safer crossing based on;
  • Pedestrians can see oncoming cars easier;
  • Motorists can see the pedestrian easier;
  • Greater motorist awareness as the visual difference of the

bumpout draws attention to the potential for pedestrians crossing at this location;

  • Pedestrian walking distance reduced by 26%

(42’ down to 31’ );

  • Provides larger collection area for pedestrians wishing to cross

the roadway.

28

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Scope of Work for the Project – cont’d

  • Drawbacks of Bumpouts
  • Increased effort for snow plowing and removal;
  • Can infringe on t he driving lanes of t he roadway;
  • Can impact t ruck t urning movement s at int ersect ions.

29

slide-30
SLIDE 30

Scope of Work for the Project – cont’d

  • Design Considerations for the Bumpouts
  • We have widened t he radius of t he bumpout s at t he

int ersect ions in order t o address t he issue of t ruck t urning movement s and snow clearing operat ions;

  • Depressed curbs are being used around t he bumpout t o aid

in snow clearing;

  • The crossing signals will help to identify the location of the

bumpout for the snow clearing crews;

  • The bumpouts have been adj usted so they are offset 0.5m from

the edge of the travelled lane;

  • If the bumpouts are not used we would need to eliminate at total
  • f 8 parking spaces in order to provide proper sight distances for

the motorists.

30

Bumpout at Renfew Ave.

  • Currently no separate left

turn lane on Raglan S t.

  • Motorist do try and illegally

weave around left turning cars by turning into the parking lane

  • If a left turn lane were to

be introduced, it would require the elimination of a

  • min. of 6 parking stalls
  • The bumpout prevents the

cars from weaving and shortens the crossing distance for pedestrians.
