RECYCLE 101

A Plan to Save the Planet

SLIDE 5

INTERESTING FACTS:

 The average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day.  Americans generate more than 200 million tons of garbage each year- Enough

to fill the Superdome from top to bottom twice a day.

 We generate about 21.5 million tons of food waste each year.  The U.S. uses enough aluminum cans to replace the entire commercial air

fleet every 3 months.

slide-6
SLIDE 6

MORE FACTS:

 Almost half of the food in the U.S. goes to waste – Approximately 3,000

pounds per second..

 In the U.S. we toss more than 100 million cellphones in the trash every year.  Americans throw away enough office paper each year to build a 12 foot wall

from Seattle to New York.

 Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.  More than 28 billion glass bottles wind up in landfills every year---that is the

equivalent of filling up 2 Empire State Buildings every 3 weeks.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Why is this important?

slide-8
SLIDE 8

The Problem?

Our landfills fill up, taking up valuable land space, and producing unacceptable levels of methane that impacts the greenhouse gases, which maintain the plant’s temperature required to sustain life.

Our forests become depleted.

Our air and water supplies become increasingly polluted.

 …and if that’s not enough to excite you,

maybe this will….

According to the State Department of Environmental Quality, Mississippi spends $69 million dollars per year to landfill more than $200 million dollars worth of recyclable material.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

So, What can we do?

slide-10
SLIDE 10

What is RECYCLING?

 Recycling is the process of creating new items from old and used materials.  It is a part of the Waste Disposal Hierarchy

slide-11
SLIDE 11

RE-USE…pretty self explanatory!

 Instead of throwing away used items we should pass them on.  Garage Sales  Thrift Stores  Hand-Me-Downs  Donate to organizations for the needy.  Wash and reuse items like, zip-lock bags, plastic spoons, forks, knives and

cups.

 Re-usable Shopping Bags

slide-12
SLIDE 12

REDUCE: Limit the amount of any material purchased.

 Purchase bulk food items, instead of pre-packaged ones.  Purchase washable towels, instead of buying paper towels.  Purchase plastic plates instead of paper plates.  Use water filters instead of purchasing bottled water. (Not applicable to Flint,

Michigan residents).

 Eat left-overs.  Stop buying items marketed as “Disposable”, such as diapers, pie tins, paper

towels and napkins, TV dinners, and aluminum roasting pans.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

RECYCLE: Turn used material into something new!

 This really isn’t a new idea. …  In Genesis 1:1, the Bible says, “In the beginning God created the Heaven’s

and the Earth.” …….From NOTHING!

 And, we have been recycling ever since, because everything that we make,

we make from something that already exists, and we turn it into something else.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

So, What is recyclable?

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Benefits:

 Reduces the cost of manufacturing.  Reduces the use of our Natural Resources (water, trees, minerals).  Reduces the negative impact to our environment.  Conserves fuel.  Reduces the need for landfills.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Interesting Facts:

 5 Plastic bottles recycled provides enough fiber to create 1 square foot of

carpet or enough fiber to fill 1 ski jacket.

 It requires 95% less energy and water to recycle a can than it does to create

  • ne from virgin materials.

 Glass can be recycled an infinite number of times and never wear out, cuts

related water pollution by 50%, and the energy saved from recycling one bottle can power a light bulb for 20 hours.

 Recycling 1 ton of cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil.  Recycling a stack of newspaper 3 feet high saves 1 tree.  If we composted wasted food, it would reduce the same amount of

greenhouse gas as taking 2 million cars of the road.

Remember…

slide-29
SLIDE 29

 Jackson and Harrison Counties combined produce 700 tons of Single Stream

Recycle Material each month.

 55% or 385 tons (770,000 lbs) of the material we receive is considered

recyclable.

 45% or 315 (630,000 lbs) tons of the material is not recyclable, and is shipped

to the landfill.

 In a year’s time, we generate and sell 4,620 tons (9,240,000 lbs) of reclaimed

material to be re-manufactured into new products. (Approximately $750,000)

 We save approximately $125,000 in landfill fees.  That totals $875,000 recovered by recycling.

slide-30
SLIDE 30

The Sad News

 Only 25% of households recycle.  If everyone recycled the income generated would be more than $2.5 million.  We could create more jobs.  We could reduce the amount of material going into our landfills.  We could greatly reduce the use of energy in the manufacturing process.  We could reduce pollution of our air and water supplies.
