  1. Craver Road Study UNC Charlotte February 24, 2010

  2. Project Description • Student Union opened August, 2009 • Vehicle/Pedestrian conflicts in front of Student Union due to excessive pedestrian volumes – Safety issues for pedestrians – Traffic flow issues for vehicles along Craver Road

  3. Student Union Crossing

  4. Student Union Crossing

  5. Student Union Crossing

  6. Student Union Crossing

  7. Project Description • Two Analysis Scenarios – Short term solution: installation of traffic/pedestrian signal at Student Union crossing • How will a signal work at this crossing? For vehicles? For pedestrians? – Long term solution: closure of Craver Road to non-essential through traffic • How can closure be implemented? What effects will closure of Craver Road have on the rest of campus?

  8. Study Area 5 STUDENT UNION 3 4 2 N 1

  9. Data Collection • Three Peak Periods – 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM • Traffic Counts at 5 study intersections • Pedestrian Counts at Student Union • Video Data • Wednesday November 18 th , 2009

  10. Traffic Analysis Procedure • Synchro 7 • SimTraffic • Sidra Intersection 3.2 • Based on HCM Methodology Highway Capacity Manual - Levels of Service and Delay UNSIGNALIZED INTERSECTION SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION AVERAGE AVERAGE LEVEL OF CONTROL DELAY LEVEL OF CONTROL DELAY SERVICE PER VEHICLE SERVICE PER VEHICLE (SECONDS) (SECONDS) A 0-10 A 0-10 B 10-15 B 10-20 C 15-25 C 20-35 D 25-35 D 35-55 E 35-50 E 55-80 F >50 F >80

  11. Existing Traffic Volumes

  12. Volume Adjustments – Craver Road Closure • Service Vehicles [Counted] • Drop-off Traffic [30% of Remaining Trips] • Source/Sink Traffic [10% - West End of Craver Rd., 30% East End] • Diverted Trips – Video data – pseudo origin-destination study to attempt to determine travel patterns

  13. Existing Traffic Volumes With Closure

  14. Future Campus Growth • Future analysis year of 2015 • In referring to Master Plan and anticipated campus growth, a compound annual growth rate of 3% was used

  15. Future Traffic Volumes With Closure

  19. Recommendations • Cameron Boulevard and Phillips Road / Craver Road – Signal at existing Phillips Road intersection expected to work well and increase safety – Future signal at proposed re-alignment of Phillips Road with Craver Road expected to work well • Northbound and southbound left turn lanes recommended on Cameron Boulevard

  20. Recommendations • Craver Road Improvements – Signalization of Student Union Crossing expected to work well • Low cycle length • Pedestrians as main line – Craver Road Closure concept drawing • Provides closure with access for University vehicles • Would fit within current infrastructure • Pedestrian friendly • Construction cost estimate - $780,000

  25. Craver Road – Roundabout 2

  26. Recommendations • Cameron Boulevard and Mary Alexander Road – Long delays/queues as expected with Craver Road Closure as unsignalized intersection – Roundabout and Signalization both adequate solutions – Roundabout concept drawing • Provides adequate capacity • Would fit within current infrastructure • Attractive entrance to campus • Construction cost estimate - $340,000
