Current situation

• Piracy of Horn of Africa significantly decreased due to e.g. military presecence in Gulf
• f Aden, armed guards and use of BMP on ships in high-risk areas

Source: IMO* contains fended off as well as successful attacks

• Root causes for piracy still present in Somalia - pirate kingpins still have capacity to

commit piracy.

• Piracy and armed robbery in Gulf of Guinea increasing Danish concern – for shipping

industry and for seafareres.

New strategy

• 2015-2018
• Stay engaged on Horn of Africa along same tracks as in former strategy (military and legal

means, capacity building)

• Gulf of Guinea as new focus area
• Protection of the Danish and international shipping

and seafarers

• A continued active role in the international cooperation and

partnerships in affected regions
