I was born in Mexico City, Mexico but grew up near Pasadena, California. I graduated from Northern Arizona University with a bachelors in Elementary and Special

  • Education. I also graduated from NAU with a Masters in

Educational Leadership. Go Lumberjacks! This will be my 23rd year teaching, all of which has been in Kyrene and in middle school grades 6th-8th. This year at Akimel A-al, I will be teaching 6th grade GATE Science and supporting students in reading intervention. I have a wonderful family full of nephews and nieces. My husband and I have raised two German Shepherds and now have a rescue dog named, Rosie. She is definitely the Teacher’s Pet! Living in AZ allows me to do all my favorite activities like hiking, paddle boarding, biking and roller skating (I’m just a beginner but I love it). Can’t wait for an awesome year!

Meet Mrs. Burgess- 6th Grade GATE Science

I am a former Kyrene student. I attended Brisas and Aprende many years ago. One of my former teachers teaches at Akimel A-al!! I graduated from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. This is my 8th year teaching in Kyrene and my 5th year at Akimel- Al. This year I am excited to be teaching 6th grade Social Studies as well as 8th grade. In my free time I enjoy going on hikes with my dogs Rascal and Roo, reading a good book, listening to music (I really miss live music!), and swimming. I also love cheering on my favorite team the Lakers! I am looking forward to another year at Akimel A-al and getting to know all of you!

I have lived in Arizona my whole life and went to the University of Arizona (GO WILDCATS) where I got my Bachelor’s in Education with an ESL

  • endorsement. I am currently working on

completing my Master’s degree from ASU, but will always be a wildcat at heart. I taught math at Kyrene Middle School for the past five years and I am excited to now be apart of the Akimel A-al

as well as a section of seventh grade math. My hobbies include hiking, game nights, and being

definitely try to be apart of the classroom.

I am a native Texan, but we’ve called Arizona home for 8 years. This year will be my 13th year teaching. I’ve lived in 5 countries (Mexico, Spain, US, China, France) and 4 states as a student or as a teacher. I love to travel, listen to music, bake pastries, watch telenovelas, read (prefer supernatural fiction), write, and hang with my two gatos (cats) and fam as much as I can. I have a Master of Arts in English from SLU (Go Billikens!), a Master of Education in Reading, and Bachelor of Arts in English from MSU (Go Mustangs!) This year, I am teaching 6th and 8th grade ELA distance-flex all year.

What do students do in an Intervention Class?

Intervention students get personalized online instruction from our I-ready diagnostic program. In addition to these lessons, they get small group support for grade level work in their regular ELA and math classes. Our goal is to close any learning gaps that students have to increase their skills in ELA and math.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

What does intervention look like each week?

Due to our instruction being online this year, there are two ways instruction is going to be provided:

1. Some students will have support during their math and reading class core instruction time. 2. All students will get pulled out into small groups to review grade level material 2-3 times a week for 30 mins. 3. All students will be expected to complete 1 hour of online instruction using I-ready passing 1-2 lessons each week. 4. All students will be expected to complete 3 assignments in Google classroom that work on specific skills that are areas of concern.
