Key Messages
Ireland compares favourably with other countries around certain club sport measures Recruitment into sport starts young and by end of primary school most children are regular participants in organised sport Declines in participation and membership begin to emerge in early adolescence and are persistent features of the sporting landscape thereafter Children and adolescents who play a variety of sports are more likely to maintain their involvement through early adulthood Adults have a strong (and increasing?) preference for informality in participation – this represents a challenge for club sport….. ………however certain sports have capacity for expanding their membership base Clubs provide considerable opportunities for adults to try new activities however they have scope to be more inclusive of different population groups Key factors affecting club membership and retention may be outside the club’s control Sport needs to pay attention to population demography as an influence on sporting behaviour
