In construction safety there is a “Focus Four” that contributes to the greatest number of preventable fatalities in the construction industry. Fall Hazards require a fall protection system to protect workers from falling from elavation or ground level to lower levels,falls through exisiting floor or roof openings,floor and roof collapses and jump from structures and equipment.
Fall Hazards:
The Focus Four are Fall Hazards, Electrocution, Struck By Hazards, and Caught In Between Hazards Fall Hazards can be protected by Safety Monitoring systems, Safety Net Systems, Personal Fall Arrest System and Guardrails
Electrocution Hazards in Construction Major types of electrocution hazards are:
- Contact with power
lines
- Contact with
energized sources
- Improper use and
flexible cords Dangers of being struck by electric components
- High voltage from
120v to 750,000v of electricity Protecting yourself from electrocution hazards:
- Maintaining and marking safe distance
from overhead and buried power
- Using Non-Conductive Equipment
- Ensuring lines are de-energized
- Using ground fault interceptors
- Using power tools and equipment as
intended
- Following lockout/tagout procedures
Struck-By Hazards in Construction
Struck-By flying objects hazards are thrown, hurled or propelled through space and strike workers Examples include:
- Piece of material separating from
equipment
- Objects ejected from power-actuated
equipment such as nail guns and fasteners
- Compressed air from tools
Protecting yourself from struck-by hazards:
- Staying away from or being alert when around heavy
equipment such as cranes and excavators
- Practicing vehicle safety around roadways, including
wearing high visibility clothing and using traffic signs and barriers.
Caught In Between Hazards in Construction
Examples of caught in between or caught in hazards:
- Cave ins during trenching
- Clothing caught in equipment
- Crushed between semi-trailer and
wall
- Crushed between truck and
forklift Preventing Caught In Between Hazards:
- Only use properly guarded machinery and
equipment
- Safeguard any moving parts
- Do not wear loose clothing that can get caught
- Make sure all machinery is sufficiently supported,
secured and safe

/breathlessness, Buried
- Contact with buried
electric cable, Gas / Oil Pipelines
- Movement of
vehicles / equipment close to the edge of cut. Preventions:
- Provide guard rails /
barricade with warning signal, provide minimum two entries
- Employ suitable size
- f shoring and
strutting if required
- Obtain permission
from competent authorities prior to excavation if needed. Different types of hazards are associated with excavation of soil. for instance, failure of soils at sides of trenches and pits, movement of buildings due excavations at its vicinity, falling workers into pits, buried workers due to collapse of earth, cave- in which may cause suffocations of labors etc. These hazards should be identified, and preventive measures should be taken to avoid any accident at construction sites.
