Case Study

Summer in Southside - Birmingham Hippodrome

  • In 2018 French artist Olivier Grossetete

commissioned to create a giant cardboard Chinese Arch located in the city’s China Town

  • Project built on several previous outdoor arts

projects engaging local Chinese community

  • 21 box-building workshops were delivered in a

local Chinese restaurant venue, Huan Gate, with over 400 participants drawn from Chinese community, Open Theatre, BOA, local schools, Hipp staff, patrons & volunteers

  • Further 1,500 participants helped raise the

arch which was enjoyed by festival audiences in excess of 5,000+
