HISTORY INFORMS US…

LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT SCHOOLS IN THE 1860’S:

  • District 1: On the corner by the Lime Kiln
  • District 2: Located on the site of the airport
  • District 3: Eldridge Street (now Hinesburg

Road)

  • District 4: Dorset Street
  • District 5: Spear Street
  • District 6: Shelburne Road

Plains School – now Rick Marcotte Central School – grew from 4 rooms to 12 rooms in 1940. Two more additions – in 1950 and 1952 – brought its size closer to the present-day building.

Orchard School with 12 rooms was built in 1957, and Chamberlin School with 12 rooms was completed in 1965.

Information on the new South Burlington High School was mailed to residents in 1959. The high school was built in 1961.
