By Tom McKenna

slide-13
SLIDE 13

STATE OF THE LAKE 2014

 New contractor (Golder Associates) performed monitoring activities in 2014  Monitored North, South and Central basins  Monitored the lake 5 times vs. 7 times in previous years

slide-14
SLIDE 14

State of the Lake / État du Lac

 Water temperature was coolest since 2008

 Transparency was the best since 2008: Mean secchi reading was 5.3 M

 Dissolved Oxygen in July/August was highest observed since 2008; Annual Mean DO was 8.77 ug/L; Range 1.01 - 13.07 ug/L

 Oxygen levels in the deeper parts of the lake continue to slowly improve – Good news for retaining P in sediments and for survival of the Lake Trout (touladi)  Phosphorous level decreased slightly. Mean TP was13.9 ug/L (down from 16.0 ug/L in 2013)

State of the Lake / État du Lac Actions

 Ongoing Monitoring of the Lake Quality  Consider monitoring other lakes in the Heney watershed to determine phosphorous levels and inputs to Lac Heney

 Ongoing vigilance in protecting and rehabilitating our shorelines is of high importance.  Plant shrubs, flowers & trees – not lawns.  Only use Phosphate free products.  Don’t use fertilizer or use TSP to clean decks and siding

APLH WATERSHED - 3E EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION INITIATIVE

By John O’Brien

slide-23
SLIDE 23

APLH Wate terSh rShed “3E” Education & Communication Initiative

The Objective:

Protect Health & Enjoyment of our Lake

slide-24
SLIDE 24
  • 1. Phosphate Products
  • 2. Septic Systems
  • 3. Shoreline Erosion

What are the Biggest Threats to the future health of Lac Heney Watershed?

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Promoting RESPECT The “3E” Plan…

(Educate, Elevate, Engage)

slide-26
SLIDE 26

1- EDUCATION

Ensure property owners and lake users know...

  • WHAT are the important issues about our lake
  • HOW they can take action to protect it
  • WHY it is important

STRATEGY - Prepare concise, high impact information resources and an engaging plan for education & communication through several channels

slide-27
SLIDE 27

2- ELEVATION

  • Elevate perceived status of Lac Heney to a

“premium” top 5 lake in Gatineau Valley

  • Elevate awareness of new vigilance for care of lake

STRATEGY - create strong, premium based identity/brand of our lake and lake association delivered through many channels

slide-28
SLIDE 28

3- ENGAGEMENT

  • Get people doing the right things
  • Increase flow of communication
  • Get people talking & contributing, even in simple

ways STRATEGY - Use face to face contact. Split lake up into communication zones via Bay Captains. Create various volunteer opportunities for everyone to consider and feel more involved.

slide-29
SLIDE 29

A Draft Action Plan

  • 1. Watershed Property Owner Survey
  • 2. Develop a Premium Lake Logo/Identity
  • 3. Create an Education/Communication Plan
  • 4. Create Communication Resources
  • 5. Set up Bay Zones and Bay Captain Program
  • 6. Create a Volunteer Opportunity List
  • 7. Bay Captain Visits
  • 8. Signage Plan & Implement 2015-2017
  • 9. Build Member / Stakeholder Distribution List
slide-30
SLIDE 30

Why Survey?

I. To understand the priorities & concerns of property owners II. To gauge our understanding of factors that can affect lake health

  • III. To capture a collective vision that is

representative of our watershed

  • IV. All of the above to engage property owners and

guide our education & communication work

PHOSPHATE CONTROL / LE CONTRÔLE DES PHOSPHATES

By Rock Radovan

slide-39
SLIDE 39

How is the lake doing?

What do we want with our lake?

  • 1. A healthy and sustainable lake ecosystem (plants,

invertebrates, fish)

  • 2. Conditions suitable for recreational activities.

Need a tool to compare our data to something to figure out if things are good, bad or in between. Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life

slide-40
SLIDE 40

Step 1: Objectives

Dissolved Oxygen

Touladi (lake trout) need

  • xygen in the cold, deep

waters of the lake.

CCME guideline: DO > 6.5mg/L for fish to survive

Total Phosporous

Organic matter (algae, plants) decomposes at the bottom of the lake and consumes

  • xygen.

To have less organic matter means lower levels of nutrients (phosphorous) that encourage growth.

CCME guideline: TP < 15.0 mg/L

slide-41
SLIDE 41

Step 2: Tool

CCME Water Quality Index

A simple method to find out how we are meeting

  • ur objectives

Compares not just whether you pass or fail, but also by how much and how often Grading system: A (great)… F (fail)

slide-42
SLIDE 42

Step 3: Results - shallow waters (< 2m.)

Shallow water: from 0 to 2m (A and A+ scores)

slide-43
SLIDE 43

Step 3: Results - middle depth (~3 - 14 m.)

Middle water: from 3m to 14m (B+ to A+ scores)

slide-44
SLIDE 44

Deep water: from 15m to 30m (F to C scores)

Step 3: Results – deep waters (> 14 m.)

slide-45
SLIDE 45

How are we doing in 2014?

Shallow water = A+ Medium depth = A+ Deep water = C

Lake trout do not live in shallow or medium water: Deep water is our primary concern. Only way to increase dissolved oxygen is to reduce total phosphorous.

slide-46
SLIDE 46

How do we reduce Total Phosphorous? / Comment peut-on reduire le Niveau de Phosphore? 1) Maintain Septic Systems in working

  • rder!

2) Avoid using Soaps/Detergents containing Phosphates 3) Move Firepits away from shoreline 4) Keep Shoreline Vegetation to absorb Phosphorous!
