Progress Towards Zero Road Toll | 26 May 2016

QLD Road Safety Strategy National Road Safety Strategy QLD Road Safety Action Plan By 2020 - 200 or fewer fatalities and 4,669 or fewer hospitalisations. Transport and Main Road’s road safety infrastructure investments strategically align with National and State Road Safety Strategy/Action Plans. Queensland's Road Safety Vision aligns with National Strategy = Zero road deaths and serious injuries.

Road Safety Action Plan

Action plan - “We refuse to accept that road trauma is a normal, unavoidable consequence of traveling on the road.”

Key infrastructure action areas:

  • 1. Make available over $300m (2015-16 & 2016-17) as part of Targeted

Road Safety Program (Safer Roads Sooner; Black Spot; Safety Mass Actions; Road Safety Minor Works; Flashing School Zone Signs).

  • 2. Partner with the Australian Government to deliver over $190m for

targeted safety treatment on the Bruce Highway, Warrego Highway, New England Highway and D’Aguilar Highway.

  • 3. By 2020 achieve 85% of travel on national network in Queensland
  • n 3 star or better roads (as defined by AusRAP).
  • 4. Improve safety for vulnerable road users by making available $10m to

improve infrastructure for bicycle riders and pedestrians and $27m

  • ver two years for the Cycle Network Local Government Grants

program.

Key infrastructure actions

  • 1. Transport and Main Roads has partnered with Australian

Government to deliver:

  • $160 million safety treatments on Bruce Highway
  • $16 million on Warrego Highway
  • $14 million on New England Highway
  • $14 million on D’Aguilar Highway.
  • 2. Flashing lights – new installations at 300 risk assessed

school zones over three years.

  • 3. Explore how to better inform drivers about high risk crash

zones.

  • 4. Improve safety around breakdown incidents on major roads

in Queensland.

  • 5. Expansion of Traffic Camera Program – point to point and

speed/red light combined cameras.

Forgiving infrastructure

  • Safe System philosophy

underpins Qld Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan.

  • Fatal & serious injury crashes
  • ccur randomly across the

network.

  • We can no longer just focus on

‘Black Spots’.

  • High risk routes or segments

need to be improved to meet goals and targets.

Treatments that are saving lives

  • Wide Centre Line Treatment (WCLT)
  • Bruce Highway WCLT – over 900kms installed to date.

New and innovative treatments

Wet weather line marking trial

  • Inverted profile – producing a noise when

driven over.

  • Water channels rapidly drain water away

and the line remains visible.

  • Grooved and angled surface is covered in

tiny glass beads reflecting light in all directions.

Vehicle Activated Signs Mass Action program

  • Encourage speed compliance at:
  • intersections
  • corners/curves

Safer school zones

  • Treat approximately 300

schools zones (100/year).

  • State government funding,

installation and maintenance for life of sign.
