New QCE System: Key components

  • New way to rank students who wish to apply for university after school:
  • new way ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)
  • QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) calculates and issues the ATAR
  • Subject name changes: now have General Subjects and Applied subjects
  • Assessment in your subjects will change:
  • fewer assessments in General subjects (4 assessments count towards your final grade in

each subject)

  • 3 items will be internal (developed by our school)
  • 1 item will be external (set and marked by QCAA – Queensland Curriculum & Assessment

Authority)

  • external item will count for 50% of your overall subject result in Maths and Science

subjects (will be held on the same day in all schools across the state) or 25% in most other general subjects

  • internal items will count for 75% of your overall subject result
  • No QCS test
  • Special Provision arrangements (AARA – Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments)

  • The ATAR or Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank is the number which determines a

student's entry into university.

  • It is the number scored by an individual is the percentage of students they 'beat' on the

higher school certificate.

  • It’s a number between 0.00 and 99.95 with increments of 0.05.
  • The ATAR is commonly used in other states and territories

What is an ATAR? …

slide-4
SLIDE 4

What must students study to be eligible for an ATAR? …

slide-5
SLIDE 5

To achieve a high ATAR…

Students should be studying subjects that:

  • they enjoy,
  • they are good at, and
  • are prerequisites for the courses they wish to apply for – please

see here

https://www.qtac.edu.au/student-resources/year10 Choosing to study ‘easy’ or ‘hard’ subjects will not assist students to get a better ATAR! Students will achieve a higher ATAR by performing WELL in their subjects!

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Assessment under ATAR …

Students study 4 units over 2 years in each subject:

  • Units 1 & 2 – studied in Year 11 (Formative assessment – QCE

credits: 1 credit per Unit with a ‘satisfactory’ result)

  • Units 3 & 4 – studied in Year 12 (Summative assessment – QCE

credits AND used in ATAR calculation)

  • completed as a ‘pair’ – students must pass both

units for 2 QCE credits. Awarded an A to E standard – external exam Term 4 (Maths/Science – 50% of

  • verall result, other General subjects – 25% of
  • verall result)

No summative assessment can be missed – AARA must be in place for credit to be awarded.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

AARA Application must be submitted for:

  • Any absence for any assessment (assignment/exam) due to

illness and misadventure

  • Application forms available on school website – supporting
  • fficial documentation must accompany the application (ie.

medical certificate/letter from sporting body – students absent due to sport representation at a State/National level)

  • Absences known in advance – contact Guidance as soon as

possible as applications must be submitted to QCAA and planning needs to take place (QCAA will not approve family holidays)
