Revision Café

  • It will take place in the dining room every

Wednesday and Thursday next half term, from 3.35 to 4.45.

  • We will publish a timetable telling students when

they can get help with different subjects.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

What can students expect?

  • Teachers to help with areas students are finding

difficult.

  • For students who don’t know how to get

started, we will have some revision tasks to kick- start their revision.

  • If a teacher feels a student is struggling they

may receive an invitation to the Café so they can get some help.

  • A timetable of what is on when.
  • Biscuits!
slide-11
SLIDE 11

How students can get the most out

  • f the Café
  • Start revising early so there is plenty of time to

get help.

  • Have some questions ready so they can get the

help they need.

  • Bring revision resources with them – this might

be revision guides, pens, pencils, highlighters, post-it notes, index cards etc.

  • Use the Café as a place to get some revision

done where there will be help at hand.

  • Come with friends – working together and

helping each other is a really effective way to revise.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Home Learning

School will:

  • Set all homework on ePraise;
  • Set a range of types of home learning (Knowledge

consolidation; Skills development; Pre-learning / Research; Post-learning; Formative; Summative);

  • Monitor the expectation to make ongoing

revision notes to consolidate understanding through related lesson exercises/tests. Students with poor progress as a result of a lack of home learning effort will be followed up.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Home Learning

Students will:

  • Check ePraise to access home learning set and any required

resources;

  • Complete home learning to the best of their ability;
  • Record on ePraise when tasks have been completed;
  • Catch up on all missed lesson and home learning;
  • Make ongoing revision notes to consolidate their understanding,

along with other home learning types by the date due. Parents will:

  • Provide an appropriate home learning environment
  • Use ePraise to monitor home learning set and its completion
  • Support their child in developing the skills of responsibility,

resourcefulness, reasoning, reflectiveness and resilience in relation to home learning.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

What can you do to help support your child?

  • Provide them with a comfortable working environment free from

distractions

  • Encourage them to complete all homework fully and if they don’t

have homework use their subject study/revision guides to make notes related to recent lessons. Actively learn content.

  • Encourage them to plan their revision and prepare thoroughly for

exams

  • Encourage them to take plenty of exercise, eat healthily and drink

plenty of water

  • If they find it helpful offer to test them and encourage them to

explain what they are learning to you

  • Keep an eye on internet use – there are some great online resources

but the internet and social media can be a huge distraction too

  • If they are unsure encourage them to talk to their teachers – most

are happy to be contacted by email

slide-15
SLIDE 15

What can you do to help support your child?

Above all – be in control, take the flak:

Phone/Tablet/Laptop/Internet Going Out Time in front of the TV Sleep Check with school first – don’t believe everything you’re told!

 Start revising now  Plan your revision  Revise Maths by doing Maths, not just reading notes  20 – 30 minutes per session, 3 days a week  Practise exam-style questions without looking at the answers and mark them accurately afterwards  Focus on what you can’t do yet  Create revision notes after every lesson  Complete homework properly every week  Be resourceful – look things up and don’t give up  Use the Maths PLC to identify topics to revise

slide-35
SLIDE 35
slide-36
SLIDE 36

 Don’t underestimate the importance of the basics…  Memorise key facts, formulas and vocabulary  Use flash cards, test yourself and repeat regularly

 Good number skills are essential at every level  Problem-solving often requires numerical methods  You need to be confident calculating with

  • positive and negative whole numbers
  • decimals
  • fractions

 Learn how to use your calculator and then remember to use it!

slide-37

 Mathswatch (online)  Revision guides and workbook  Maths PLC (learning checklist)  Revision Café after school  Revision sessions at lunchtime in the Maths Dept  Small group work with a teacher at lunchtime

  • This is also important for the PPEs

in December.

slide-48

Getting the level of entry right is vital

  • Foundation : G1 - G5

  • 40% standard and 60% high

demand questions

slide-49

  • All students in sets 1 and 2 will

have access to the Higher content.

  • A student must be entered for the

same tier of entry for all 6 papers. To confirm a higher entry, students must demonstrate their potential in the December and March PPEs.

slide-50
SLIDE 50

Coursework has gone

  • Replaced by “ Required Practicals” and

“Working Scientifically” based questions in exams that students complete from year 9 to year 11

  • Combined students: 7x Biology 6x Chemistry

and 8x Physics

  • Separate Sciences : 10x Biology, 8x Chemistry

and 10x Physics

slide-51
SLIDE 51
  • Questions in the written exams will be on the

practicals they have done and some where they have to apply their knowledge in novel contexts.

  • These questions will count for at least 15% of

the overall marks for the qualification.

  • Students must therefore revise their practical

write ups as part of their revision

slide-52
