  9. Y4 Multiplication Check In 2017, the Department for Education announced a Times Tables check for Y4 children, to begin in June 2020. This will be an ‘online, onscreen digital assessment’, so either on a laptop or iPad. The test will be timed and last approx. 5 minutes. They will have 6 seconds to answer a times tables question, or related division fact, up to 12x12. The test will be marked automatically. The DfE state that the motivation behind the multiplication tables check is purely to allow teachers a chance to identify children who need some more help with their times tables to stop them from falling further behind their peers as they move up to Year 5 (and then Year 6). Times tables knowledge is really important for children, particularly as they move through school. Children who don’t have quick times tables recall, find it difficult to access a lot of the maths in Y5/Y6 and, subsequently, can fall behind. https://matr.org/blog/times-tables-test-parents-guide/ 9
