The move to Year 11…...
- QCAA regulated courses and assessment
- An increase in workload and an expectation that students will work
more independently
- Students will need to take greater responsibility for their own learning
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au
Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)
- Requires 20 credits in total
- CORE (12 credits) can be made up of different combinations – 3 x Subjects
studied over the 2 years / or certificate equivalent (8pts) + 1 x subject studied
- ver the 2 years.
- + 8 additional credits from a combination of study = 20.

(4 credits awarded for each subject studied over 2 years) on EXIT.
- PASS at least one semester in English (Authority or English Communication)
and Mathematics (A,B,C or Prevocational Mathematics)
- Literacy & Numeracy can be obtained with a ‘C’ on QCS Test.
Pathways
- OP Eligible – OP / QCS TEST
OR….
- OP Ineligible – QTAC Selection Rank Eligible / and QCS Test
- Some students may receive a rank and an OP
- There are many combinations students can choose and can include:
- VET – School-based traineeship / apprenticeship
- Certificate Courses (Cert I, II, III, IV – Diploma)
- Tertiary Studies (Griffith Guest, Griffith / Bond Semester.)
OP PATHWAY
- An OP PATHWAY is designed SPECIFICALLY for
students who are wanting to attend University.
- It is mainly focused on students wanting to enter
into COMPETITIVE COURSES. vThese courses might include – Law, Sciences, Medicine, Physiotherapy.
OP ELIGIBLE
OP (Overall Position) “A student’s OP shows their position in a statewide rank order based on their overall achievement in AUTHORITY subjects”. OP 1 is the highest OP 25 is the lowest
OP Eligible Students
To be eligible for an OP, students must:
- Complete 20 Semester units of credit in Authority
subjects
- Study at least three subjects for four semesters
- Sit the QCS Test
- Attend school until the final day of Year 12 –
Approx.: 16th November 2018.
QCS TEST
The QCS Test contributes information towards calculation of Overall Positions (OPs) which are used to select students for tertiary entrance. A student's individual QCS Test result is not used on its own in the calculation of their OP — instead, group results are used as part of the statistical scaling processes. OP ineligible sitting the QCS results are not used in the calculation of the group results. A student's individual result on the QCS Test (from A to E) is reported on the student's Senior Statement or Statement of Results.
QCS TEST
- Test achievement of core skills
- Does not test intelligence or knowledge of particular Year 12 subjects
- Assumed general knowledge, vocabulary and mathematical operations to
Year 10
- Based on Common Curriculum Elements (CCE)
Important Information:
- Students need to check the Prerequisites required for the course of
study for which they intend to apply.
- AUTHORITY ENGLISH is a Prerequisite for most University
- programs. Students MUST complete 4 semesters and exit with at
least a Sound Achievement. English Communication does not satisfy this prerequisite requirement.
- Students will also need to be aware of any Field Positions that may be
used if QTAC need to scale student admissions further.
FIELD POSITIONS
A student may receive up to 5 Field positions (FPs)
- Field A – extended written expression
- Field B – short written communication
- Field C – basic numeracy
- Field D – solving complex problems
- Field E – substantial practical performance
qEligibility for an FP depends on the combination of Authority subjects studied and the number of weighted semesters completed. q60 weighted semesters in a field required for eligibility in that field qStudent Senior Learning Handbook – example of calculating eligibility
OP Ineligible Student / QTAC Rank
- Order of merit position
- AN ALTERNATIVE TO OP
- Uses results in all subjects for a point system
- Position on a scale from 99 downwards
- Used to allocate tertiary places in order of merit for
applicants without an OP.
OP Ineligible Student
- Students are allocated a QTAC selection rank based
- n their best 20 semesters.
- This can be created from Authority and Authority
registered subjects, VET units of competency / modules and the QCS.
- They also need to meet subject prerequisites and the
tertiary institution’s rules and regulations
- Students who are OP ineligible can gain entry to
tertiary courses through QTAC.
