Use Mock Feedback Effectively

  • 1. ‘RAG Rated’ topics highlight individual

strengths and areas for improvement.

  • 2. A ‘HegartyMaths’ clip number directs

students to a video clip and an online quiz.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Using Hegarty Maths

▶ All students have an individual login for

hegartymaths.com

▶ When logged in, students can type the clip number into

the search bar at the top of the page. What you can do to help:

▶ Check that your child has completed the HegartyMaths

tasks for their amber and red topics. There will be a record of this online along with a score.

slide-12

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Morning Revision

▶ Two morning revision sessions each week starting after February half term. ▶ The sessions last from 8.45 - 9.15. ▶ Self guided revision sources provided to each student. ▶ An extra opportunity to seek support from a member

  • f the Maths Dept.

What you can do to help: Where possible, ensure your child is in school by 8.45am

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Fortnightly Tests

▶ A set of practice tests will be to prepare for a series of four fortnightly tests. (Beginning after half term) ▶ A test is completed in class each fortnight. ▶ If students fail to reach the pass mark twice, an after school revision session is made available to provide further support. What you can do to help: ▶ Check that your child has completed the practice tests. ▶ Ask them when they have their next fortnightly test. Can they explain to you how to answer the questions? ▶ Encourage them to be proactive in solving a problem them don’t understand.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Past Papers

▶ The most important part of effective Maths revision. ▶ Students will complete one paper each fortnight until

they go on study leave.

▶ Feedback will be provided in lessons so students can

improve on their errors. What you can do to help?

▶ Provide a space where your child can concentrate in

exam style conditions.

▶ Encourage your child to attempt all of the questions

and seek support when they need help.

▶ Ask your child to show you their past paper. These are

some things you might see...

SLIDE 22

Making Maths Manageable

slide-23
SLIDE 23

START EARLY

  • Starting Early is KEY to being successful in your GCSEs.
  • Your Effort in class now is just as important now as in a

term’s time.

  • Starting early doesn’t just mean revision at home after

school, but also working your hardest within every lesson, as these lessons are just as important.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

GET ORGANISED

  • It is the student’s responsibility to make sure they have all the

equipment they need for every maths lesson: pens, pencils, ruler, rubber, protractor, compasses, and a SCIENTIFIC calculator.

  • Don’t leave homework to the night before in case you have difficulties

with it and need help before the hand in date - this is a point parents can help with by ‘politely’ reminding the student to check if they have homework and encourage them to complete it as soon as they can - especially to reduce ‘Sunday night stress’

slide-25
SLIDE 25

FIND YOUR PERSONAL REVISION TECHNIQUES

  • At this point in year 11 it is really important for you to have found the

revision techniques that work best for you.

  • Revision that seems to work best for Maths is Exam papers and making

use of all that are provided as you will be eventually sitting a similar paper.

  • For Maths, it is most important to find your weaknesses and then work on

them so they are no longer your weaknesses but rather your strengths. This will save you lots of time as it means you don’t need to catch up on 2 years’ worth of content weeks before your exam whilst revising for another 10 subjects.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

USE YOUR TEACHER

  • Teachers are there to help you as much as you need, so don’t be

afraid to ask them as many questions as you need to because even if you think it’s a stupid question, as it is really important you understand everything with the extensive content in the new GCSEs.

  • Also, staying behind after a lesson is always a good thing as it will

allow you to catch up with the rest of the class instead of falling behind.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

HOW PARENTS CAN GET INVOLVED

  • Check their MyMaths account regularly, you can get their login details from

their planner and from there you will be able to check the tasks your child hasn’t yet completed but also check their progress.

  • Try and take an interest in what they are studying and ask them questions

about topics. The best way to test a child’s understanding is by asking them to explain it to you, this will help them know if they understand it themselves.

  • Ask about revision timetables, but don’t add more pressure as they already

have a lot on their minds

  • Finally, allow them to work on other subjects and relax as maths 24/7 isn’t

everyone’s idea of fun!

Tier of Entry & Course Entry

  • Tier of entry (FT or HT) has been be finalised by class

teachers for both Separate Science and Combined Science

  • students. The tier of entry will be shown on printed exam

timetables.

  • Entry onto A-Level Biology, Chemistry & Physics will require

students achieving a grade 6 on the HT paper. For Applied Human Biology a grade 4 on either the FT or HT paper will be accepted.

  • A small number of Separate Science students will be entered

for Combined Science in June 2020 based on their mock exam results across all three subjects. Parents have been informed about this.

They are always useful.’ ‘Revise thoroughly for each topic test as this will help you understand the science as you are taught the course. You will also learn which revision strategies suit you best.’

Good Luck!

‘Use the resources on Google Drive. The Key Theory revision presentations are excellent as well as the practice exam questions.’ ‘Focus your revision on all of your science subjects not just the one you find easiest or most enjoyable e.g. Biology.’

Coping Strategies

Think of a time when you were most content and settled? Where was it? When was it? More importantly, why do you think you were so content and settled? This might help you to think about what helps you to relax and reduce stress. Mrs Hartley’s folder on Google Classroom for all Y11 students: “Strategy And Well-Being”
