Academic Transition from Yr 6-Yr 7
Context for your child
- There is a very real North/South divide in terms
- f educational achievement.
- White (mainly “working class”) boys are the
largest group of underachieving students
- nationally. This trend impacts here at Freddies
and in the North West as a whole.
- Ethnic diversity and wider career opportunities in
the South and particularly London has impacted positively upon schools’ culture, contributing to the North/South divide.
Wigan and Salford
Your child will need to have the skills to be able to do jobs that have not yet been invented!

Your support and guidance is crucial!
“The research is overwhelmingly clear: when parents play a positive role in their children’s education, students do better in school.”
Barriers for parents
- Time.
- Negative experience of school themselves.
- Concerns over the costs/debt associated with
higher education.
- Anxiety that parents themselves cannot access
the course content. How can I help, I know nothing about … ?

How Show My Homework can Help You
Homework Description
Your homework tasks are clearly laid out in Show My Homework with all the information you need to complete them.
What is Show My Homework
Homework on your computer, phone and tablet! A to-do list organises all your work for you. Helps you manage your homework from wherever you are.
Building resilience and independence.
- When students reach Y11 we advise them to
spend a minimum of 2 hours of study per evening and 4 hours at weekend.
- We do not expect this of students in Y7 but it
is important that students learn to manage their time effectively. Aim to get your child into good study habits. Encourage them to put quality time aside to do their homework.
SIMS Parent App Monitor attendance, behaviour and achievement Receive reports on-line as soon as they are published Receive all the background attainment data we hold on your child.
How your child will be taught.
English, Maths, Science , MFL, RS, History and Geography are all taught in partly-setted groups. We do not use numerical set- names to group students. Classes are named after artists and
- writers. Groups are kept under review throughout the year.
A= Austen M = Monet T = Turner P = Picasso L = Lowry Art, Drama, Music and Computer Science are taught in forms. DT is taught mainly in forms. Boys and girls are taught separately in PE.

- English is split into Language and Literature. These
subjects are taught separately.
- Bespoke programmes of study to support learners
at all levels
- Emphasis on teaching reading, writing and oracy
skills that can be used across all subjects
- Opportunities to become involved in extra-curricular
writing groups
