WHY WORK BASED LEARNING?

Obvious disconnect between high school and college & careers:

  • 33% of 848 small-business owners and chief executives said they had unfilled job openings

because they couldn't identify qualified applicants (WSJ-San Diego)

  • By 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be 1 million more computer

science jobs than graduating students qualified for them

Connect what they’re doing in school with the real world and they’re more likely to graduate and enroll in college

  • Higher attendance and graduation rates
  • Minority students participating in WBL entered college at twice the rate of non-participating

minority students

  • Higher rates of adult employment success for all categories of disability
slide-27
SLIDE 27

ICC’s provide:

  • Complete coordination of events/guest speakers
  • Direct communication to teachers
  • All materials/supplies needed for events
  • Outreach with industry partners
  • Ongoing WBL opportunities for students in San Diego

& Imperial counties

WORK BASED LEARNING… HOW CAN YOU HELP?

How can counselors/teachers help:

  • Spread the word about our events/opportunities
  • Work with your district to provide transportation to events
  • Register for events online by deadline
