Q1 2016 SMA‘s large scale on-grid storage system can provide the grid management services needed to secure grid operations even without conventional power plants. It can take on the frequency- dependent control of active power feed-in, stabilize the voltage with reactive power supply and help re-establish supply after grid failure. Transmission losses and complicated grid congestion management can therefore be avoided just as costly grid infrastructure investments can.

Energy storage system for power system frequency regulation with Sunny Central Storage

System frequency regulation for KEPCO power grid

The SMA Hybrid Utility solution for ancillary services

SMA is supplying a large-scale storage project, run by the state-owned Korean electric utility company KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), with 24 Sunny Central Storage 1000 battery inverters and system technology. The project is aimed at supplying reserve power and is the largest of its kind in the world. In addition to SMA, only local companies were qualified for the other portions of the 200- megawatt project. Supplying reserve power is of particular importance in Korea. Because of the country’s island location and its border with neighboring North Korea, it is not possible to import the balancing power needed to stabilize utility grids the way it is done in other countries. The power must therefore be generated and supplied within the country itself. With on-grid storage systems, the Sunny Central Storage battery inverters provide a full range of grid management services such as frequency control or grid congestion management. This reduces

  • ngoing

reserve power capacities and ensures grid

  • stability. KEPCO has announced that in the coming years it

will issue invitations to bid on additional portions of frequency regulation projects, each with 200 MW that will be used to supply reserve power for grid stabilization. This is intended to guarantee long-term reliability of the Korean utility grid.
