What is Disability Services?  Disability Services is the college office that approves accommodations for any student with a disability taking college-level coursework.  Accommodations for college students with disabilities are approved through the lenses of The Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ) and The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart E .  Accommodations for high school students with disabilities are approved through the lenses of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ( IDEA ), Free Appropriate Education ( FAPE ), and The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart D .

  3. The College Credit Plus Student  High School students taking College Credit Plus (CC+) classes where college credit is being earned, are considered to be college students .  As such, high school students enrolled in College Credit Plus courses, are subject to college-level expectations and responsibilities.

  4. Who Does This Apply To? High School College IDEA, FAPE, Rehab Act ADA, Rehab Act Section 504 Section 504 Subpart D Subpart E Every student with a disability, Students with a disability who regardless of the nature or meet the academic and severity of the disability. technical standards requisite to admission .  The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart E states that postsecondary institutions “may not make preadmission inquiry as to whether an applicant for admission is a handicapped person but, after admission, may make inquiries on a confidential basis as to handicaps that may require accommodation.” (104.42 B.4)

College-Level Accommodations  It is important to keep in mind that college-level accommodations "are not required to produce the identical result or level of achievement for handicapped and non- handicapped persons, but must afford handicapped persons equal opportunity to obtain the same result, to gain the same benefit, or to reach the same level of achievement, in the most integrated setting appropriate to the person’s needs.” (The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart A, 104.4.2)

Some Examples of High School Accommodations No Longer Appropriate at the College Level High School College Administer test over several days Must complete test once started Instructor repeats/ rephrases directions Student should ask questions when during class appropriate in class, or email Instructor outside of class for clarification Study guides Only if available to entire class Access to notes during testing Only if available to entire class Adjusted class schedule/ shortened day Students registered with DS have priority registration , schedule classes appropriately Modifying tests/ homework Students must complete same assignments coursework as non-disabled peers

Any Specific Questions Regarding Approved/ Appropriate Accommodations?  College-level accommodations are in place to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to an education as their non-disabled peers.  The student is expected to learn, understand, and remember class materials.  High School-level accommodations are in place to ensure that students with disabilities are as successful as possible.  Teachers and staff help the student learn, understand, and remember class materials.

  9. Who Knows? High School College IDEA, FAPE, Rehab Act ADA, Rehab Act Section 504 Section 504 Subpart D Subpart E Teachers and staff are aware Student’s must self-disclose which students have an disability to Instructors IEP/ETR, ISP or 504 Plan  Students must register with Disability Services, including completion of an Intake Appointment with an Advocate. The student can then notify Instructors of approved accommodations by providing the Instructor with a copy of their Letter of Accommodation .

  10. Registering with Disability Services 1. Send us your documentation . By “documentation” we mean a copy of your IEP/ETR, 504 Plan, doctor’s notes, anything that shows us what your disability is and how it will affect you in college. You can ask your Intervention Specialist to send it for you 2. Once you get an email from your Disability Services Advocate saying that you are “approved for intake”, fill out the Online Registration Form . The link to this form is in the email you received that states you are “approved for intake.” 3. Please call or email your Disability Services Advocate to schedule your intake interview . For your convenience, intake interviews can be scheduled to take place at a Columbus State Regional Learning Center near you, or at either of the Columbus State campuses (Downtown or Delaware). Please be sure to mention your location preference when contacting your Advocate.

  11. Intake Interview  It is important to note that submitting a student’s documentation does not register the student with Disability Services at Columbus State.  They will need to meet with a Disability Services Advocate to complete an Intake Interview .  Only when the Intake Interview is complete, and a Letter of Accommodation generated, will the student be registered with Disability Services.

  12. Letter of Accommodation  Students must provide Instructors with a copy of their Letter of Accommodation in order to be able to utilize their approved accommodations .  The Letter of Accommodation serves as proof of registration with Disability Services and outlines the student’s approved accommodations .

  13. Parental Involvement High School College IDEA, FAPE, Rehab Act ADA, Rehab Act Section 504 Section 504 Subpart D Subpart E Parents have meaningful Student is considered a college opportunities to participate in student and accepts the rights the education of the children and responsibilities associated with being a college student  Under FERPA, when a “student is enrolled in both a high school and a postsecondary institution, the two schools may exchange information on that student. If the student is under 18, the parents still retain the rights under FERPA at the high school and may inspect and review any records sent by the postsecondary institution to the high school”.
