Case Study : UK – EU’s Second Largest Passenger Car Market

New diesel cars emit 95% less soot from the tailpipe than those made 15 years ago and average new car CO2 has been cut by 13.1% CO2 has been cut by 13.1% since 1997.

“It is really encouraging to see the growth in diesel registrations. This trend has been carried

  • n since the end of 2007 when the diesel vehicles exceeded 40 per cent of the total market.

New diesel engines are around 20 per cent more fuel-efficient than a petrol equivalent – good news for the motorist at times of rising fuel costs, and it also means a similar saving on CO2 emissions – good news for the environment too. Fuel efficiency is a high priority for customers and it is encouraging to see that nearly half of the market is diesel.”, said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.

BMW Diesel Competence. Solutions for Sustainability.

  • Modern diesel engines today have overcome disadvantages of earlier models
  • f loud engine noise and high maintenance cost
  • f loud engine noise and high maintenance cost.
  • Modern diesel engines are now quiet and require less maintenance as

compared with gas engines of similar size.

  • There is no sparking as the fuel auto-ignites. The absence of spark plugs or

spark wires has lower maintenance costs.

  • Fuel cost per Kilowatt produced is 30%-50% lower than that of gasoline

engines.

  • Gas units burn hotter than diesel units, and hence they have a significant

shorter life compared with diesel units.
