ACTOM (Pty) Ltd is a black empowered electrical engineering company employing over 5800 people with an annual order intake in excess of R 6-billion. ACTOM has a number of related manufacturing and trading interests across its 27 operating units, 22 production facilities and 25 distribution centres throughout South Africa. ACTOM formerly traded under the name Alstom South Africa and re-branded to ACTOM in September 2009
Technology partners
ACTOM partners Alstom France for environmental equipment and in serving the maintenance, upgrade and retrofit market for larger boilers, as well as for railway transport activities. ACTOM holds exclusive distribution, technology and representation rights for Alstom Grid (formerly the transmission business of Areva T&D) in South Africa and maintains management, technical and commercial links to Alstom Grid business units in Europe Following the acquisition by Scneider Electric of the global distribution business of Areva T&D, the distribution, technology and representation agreements that exists between ACTOM and Areva will remain in place untill such time as a new agreement has been concluded

With a history in Boiler making dating back to 1824 And technology partners such as Combustion Engineering Rolls Royce, Alstom and various others, JT has access to and has built up a technology base that makes them leaders in the industry.

History, experience and technology
1824 William Thompson established an iron boat building business in Bilston, UK 1935 Agent appointed in South Africa 1954 John Thompson – Albert de Jong (Pty) Ltd manufacture their first boiler in South Africa. 1960 John Thompson Africa (Pty) Ltd established under control of UK parent company. 1969 John Thompson UK acquired Cochran to become Europe’s leading manufacturer of shell boilers. 1977 Clarke Chapman Ltd & Reyrolle Parsons Ltd formed Northern Engineering Ltd (NEI). 1989 NEI merged with Rolls-Royce creating Rolls-Royce Industrial Power Group which included International Combustion Ltd, Cochran and John Thompson Africa. 2001 ALSTOM Power purchased the assets of NEI Africa including John Thompson Africa and ICAL and created the business Division – John Thompson Boilers. 2004 Alstom South Africa acquired 90% of its shares from Alstom Plc and became a South African
