New event date confirmed by KCI Expo Center for “Caring for the Kingdom” Symposium Wednesday September 22, 2021 Watch for details in early spring.

I love hearing those words! It takes lots of dedication and practice for a team to execute plays that lead to that touchdown. Yet even with energy, exuberance, tremendous effort, and pinpoint focus many times teams do not make that

  • touchdown. And while the team ruminates on what they might have done that

cost them the touchdown, it may have been totally out of their control. Imagine trailing your opponent by 1 point. There’s 24 seconds left in the game. You have a top-notch kicker, who is making a 27-yard field goal attempt. The kick is up… it looks perfect… then a huge gust of wind stops the ball in mid-air, dropping it like a brick to the ground – and just shy of the goalposts. This actually happened on November 19, 1983 and cost Mississippi State the Egg Bowl game, forever after known as the “Wind Bowl.” Mississippi State fans blame Mother Nature for their loss to Ole Miss. While I am not sure we need to blame Mother Nature for 2020, there are plenty of happenings that cause us to constantly remember we are living in interesting

  • times. COVID-19. Murder Hornets. Rioting. All things that remind us we need to

learn much more about nature and about people, to understand our universe. To borrow Kyle Adkins words from his MO-MGMA article, “It is clear to all of us that we have too many things going in our lives right now personally and professionally to risk pulling our members together at a time like this.” There has been no lack of dedication, energy, effort or focus of the boards of GKC MGMA, NWMO MGMA, KCMPA, and AAPC-KC. Yet similar to Mississippi State, we’re not going to win this game this year. The hard work is not in vain,

  • though. These groups worked hard to reschedule the symposium for September

22, 2021, using the same game plan – the same theme, venue and speakers where

  • possible. I know the analogy doesn’t fit with football but think of it as a really long

rain delay. On behalf of the associations mentioned above, we wish you safety and good

  • health. We wish you success in your professional life and prosperity for your
  • business. And most of all, thank you for your continued support!

Jul July ACMPE Update: A Ne New Opportunity

Without a doubt these are challenging times. Managing a medical practice is hard enough but now we are dealing with COVID-19, reductions in revenue, changes in care delivery, telemedicine, patient safety concerns, supply chain issues and so much more. Yet in the midst of all the chaos you are leading; most days without recognition for the job you are doing. Most of you know to become Certified with MGMA there is a requirement for a bachelor’s degree; however, now there is a NEW OPPORTUNITY for you to be recognized for your expertise that does not have an education requirement! MGMA has just introduced ACMPE knowledge certificates. These are targeted at specific topics. The courses are available On Demand and will have a quiz at the conclusion. Once you successfully complete the course you can receive an ACMPE Certificate for that targeted topic. The first offering is Telemedicine. There will be many more topics coming. The Certificates can build on one another with no limit to the number of certificates you can earn. If you would like more information on the ACMPE Certificates, please contact me.

Online webinar tips to follow!

When conducting a webinar, here are some tips from international expert Nancy Setter-Murphy via the Wild Apricot webinar:

 People are craving conversation and want to see and be with people again. Show them on screen.  Webinar attendance is waning due to overuse. Solution is to find innovative new ways to meet online within the online structures.  Keep engaging viewers with questions every 3-5- minutes, ask for their answer or ask them to ponder it, respond in chat.  Don’t’ use slides only - Keep attendees engaged and give breaks if meeting is long. Discuss each point and shift topic every ten minutes or so. Break into small segments if a large crowd.  Ask a question that gets them involved with that part of the talk.  Ask Popcorn Round question(s) that have a one-word answer from each participating using chat function. Continual information taxes the brain.  Use split screen. With slides on side. Use hands-up feature.  Use demos, surveys, and short videos.  Use video option to show images (not just names) if possible. Important for speaker, especially to see them for their reactions.  Use hearing impaired closed captioning when available.  Cut and paste instructions for the meeting in the chat area ahead

  • f time for attendees.

 Best times for virtual meetings: Breakfast or lunch is best. Happy hour 7-8pm after dinnertime.  Use of meeting sponsors: give 3-4 minutes to share tops at start

  • r middle of event (be clear on the amount of time with

sponsor). Can use a short video or a talk. Never schedule for end

  • f webinar. If people know the pattern, they will log out before

event ends. Mention the sponsor in the wrap-up. And be sure to follow up with sponsor.  Stay away from politics.  Ask about experiences, feelings and thoughts, advantages and disadvantages when applicable.  Nancy said of late racism is coming up a lot all over the world and people are talking about it.)  Watch for unconscious bias when leading a virtual

  • meetings. Make conscious decisions. Watch body language,

facial expressions. Set yourself where only upper chest and head show being mindful of the background. Turn off video before getting up for a break.  Companies, NFP and social groups are in a quandary about staying virtual or returning to office setting. Nancy’s experience: Most say they are going to remain virtual and get out of big office buildings.  Senior leaders vs. young members. Honor the wisdom of seniors and focus on their experience; glean ideas and new skills from the

  • young. Imaging what the group feels like from their perspective.

 Joining: Members coming in during the pandemic is very touchy and a murky area. Find a tempting reason to join. Not for profits are really

  • hurting. Engage the membership by asking them “What do you want?”

“What do you need?” Ask all sorts of questions to understand what they are feeling around the association or business. Focus on the positive only. Find donations or sponsors to help NFPs.  If someone speaks too long or dominates the meeting: Thank them for their insight as you interrupt them. Honor that person, flatter their ego, slowly move on to next speaker as you show your appreciation for what they shared.  Hardest thing as a moderator: Managing dis-functional behavior on a webinar carefully. Always deal with it positively. If you are interested in more ideas, contact Nancy Setter-Murphy at https://GuidedInsights.com https://www.guidedinsights.com/services/virtual-teams- training-facilitation-and-coaching/
