History

The Question

How is the company doing with safety training? I’ll look into it and get back to you…

slide-4
SLIDE 4

History

His findings

  • Hundreds of facilities with no central system for training records
  • Training managed by each facility or division independently
  • Gathering the data is complicated
  • All seven safety managers have their own safety training material
  • Four methods of tracking training: paper-file, spreadsheet, HR system and about

half of the plants used a LMS

  • Over 12 languages spoken company-wide with most sites only training in English

and Spanish

  • No way of measuring if the training material was effective

History

His report and plan of action

Sorry it took a month to get back to you. Everyone says their training is getting completed, but their isn’t a central system of record so it is difficult to verify and measure. What do you recommend we do?

History

His Report and plan of action

I recommend implementing a company-wide Learning Management System (LMS) I like that plan. Please make it happen.

Lessons learned

  • Not all LMS are created equal, picking the right LMS company to

partner with is important.

  • LMS isn’t ideal for everyone but it is best for the organization as a

whole.

  • Lack of technological capabilities at many sites to support traditional

LMS self-paced training.

  • Multiple training delivery methods are important
  • Self-paced
  • Instructor lead

History

Success

  • The second attempt was still challenging but successful
  • We picked an LMS company that was willing to flex, learn and evolve

with our company

  • Baby steps - We started with what we had, then improved
  • Started tracking current training in the LMS, then
  • Standardized training company-wide
  • Training now available in 12 languages
  • 20% reduction in OSHA recordable incidents (TRIR) after first year
  • Continue to refine
