Wind Energy: Advantages

  • Geo Thermal energy requires

special location which is not many in the world whilst wind can be found sufficiently, almost every where

  • Investment return time can be

very higher than wind energy harnessing systems

  • Wind energy conversion does not

produce greenhouse gas emission in contrast with biomass

  • Wind energy can pay back the

energy spent for its manufacture very soon, whilst harvesting biomass corps often takes more energy than can be produced with it

Wind Energy: Advantages

  • Using wind turbine, can generate

electricity ANYTIME unlike solar panels which only work at daytime

  • Nearly all countries have several

windy areas, while few countries have continually sunny regions.

  • Wind‐produced power costs nearly

twice less per KWh than solar

  • Hydro is currently the most used renewable

resource and incredibly efficient if sited

  • correctly. Its reliability also surpasses the

wind energy due to stability of water flow against wind

  • It is really hard to find a good location for a

dam, so Hydro is not expanding todays. Wind energy is catching up its high position, and it wouldn’t be long until it happen

Wind Energy: Future

  • Main Drawbacks
  • It is more expensive to produce wind-sourced electricity than other

conventional sources, such as nuclear and thermal energy.

  • Wind power is intermittent because winds are unpredictable and

uncontrollable.

Wind Energy: Future

  • IRAN
  • Iran has this capacity to produce near to 40,000 MW Wind-produced electricity

which is about half of required energy in the country in a year.

Wind energy harnessing: Conventional

28 2 July 2017 WIND ENERGY CONTROL BY MAJID FIROUZBAHRAMI

  • Advantages
  • The tall tower base allows access to stronger

wind in sites with wind shear

  • High efficiency, since the blades always move

perpendicularly to the wind, receiving power through the whole rotation

  • Disadvantages
  • Massive tower construction is required
  • Components of a horizontal axis wind turbine

(gearbox, rotor shaft …) being lifted into position

  • Their height makes them obtrusively visible
  • Downwind variants suffer from fatigue and

structural failure

  • HAWTs require an additional yaw control

mechanism to turn the blades toward the wind

  • HAWTs generally require a braking or yawing

device in high winds to stop

Wind energy harnessing: HAWT

  • Advantages
  • No yaw mechanisms is needed
  • A VAWT can be located nearer the ground,

making it easier to maintain the moving parts.

  • VAWTs have lower wind startup speeds
  • VAWTs can be installed when taller structures

are prohibited

  • Disadvantages
  • Most VAWTs have an average decreased

efficiency from a common HAWT due to the additional drag that they have as their blades rotate into the wind

  • Having rotors close to the ground where wind

speeds are lower, VAWT does not take advantage of higher wind speeds

  • VAWT is not commonly deployed due to the

serious disadvantages mentioned above, so is not familiar for investors and this has made it almost neglected over the last 50 years
