Preparing Your Child for High School
- You can help before school begins by:

– Allowing your child to undertake more prac3cal skills such as making their own lunch and breakfast, washing and ironing their own uniforms and general chores around the house.
Social
– You can help support their resilience by understanding that setbacks are a learning experience, that they will be required to take turns, say hello and use appropriate manners

– That they have a study area – Learn and use teachers names

The Aviation program has two qualified teachers with industry experience, commercial pilot’s licences and flight instructor qualifications. A purpose-built Aviation Centre has two flight simulators and the remainder of the course time is spent at airports and in the
- skies. The course caters for the learning needs of all students, from those seeking a career
in aviation, science or engineering to other aviation-related pursuits.

As one of only four schools endorsed by Netball WA, this program offers your child the opportunity to excel at the sport they love. Commi^ed teachers and coaches are former state and na3onal level representa3ves
- r coaches. The players compete in local and Interna3onal compe33ons
and students come to understand the level of commitment required to achieve success.
Netball
The Music course offers SIM lessons in flute, classical guitar, electric and bass guitar, percussion, brass, clarinet and saxophone. Students are required to join the Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Junior or Senior Classical Guitar Ensemble and/or the Vocal Ensemble. They rehearse once a week before or aLer school. Each band/ensemble is engaged in many performances throughout the year.

Academic Extension Course
AEC offers students from Years 7 to 10 a diverse range of extended academic opportuni3es. AEC students make up the top mainstream class in each year group. The Program has two parts, Mathema3cs and Science being one and English and Humani3es & Social Science being the other. Students can be accepted into one or both. Students selected are in separate extension classes for these subjects from day one.
Melville Senior High School
- Our high school is bigger than your child’s primary
school, with approximately 1,400+ students.
- Although the Year 7s will be integrated within the
school so they can access specialist classrooms and facili3es, they will also have a dedicated area for lunch and recess.
- This will include dedicated handball and basketball
facili3es, as well as a beau3ful sculptured garden in which to relax.

- 4 hours each of Maths, Science English and HASS.
- 2 hours of language (for 6 months)

- Homework and Study Sessions:
- Year 7, 8 and 9 students have the opportunity to
receive extra help during supervised aLerschool classes
- They can use the 3me to work on homework,
assignments or prepara3on for exams in the MESH (Maths, English, Science and HASS classes)

- The P & C are kindly providing sandwiches and
muffins each session.
- Homework:
- Year 7s are expected to complete homework and/or
revision nightly for each subject taught that day.
- This should be approximately one hour per night, five
nights a week.

- Thankyou for purchasing and providing iPads or Mac
books for your children
- Year 7 students will be using them in all class
ac3vi3es including; classroom rules, calculators, note taking from textbooks, book review notes, word, pages, taking photos in Science, English and elec3ve classes.
- We strongly recommend purchasing a very
protecIve case and taking out insurance for your child’s device as the school cannot take responsibility for any damage to a device at school.
- In the first week all students should be online
and able to access the web and interac3ve apps.
- Please keep an eye on games added to your
child’s iPads they can distract from educa3on both at home and in class.
- Mobile Phones:
- Not seen and not heard in class
- If it is used in class it will be confiscated by staff
- Once confiscated , kept in locked storage in student services
- Students to collect at the end of the day.
- Third strike parents will be asked to personally collect it from
Student Services.

Uniforms
- All students must be wearing correct Melville Senior High
School Uniform when they are at school.
- Hats are by choice, however, very much encouraged in sport
classes – no rude, offensive or illegal mo3ves, and decora3ons, they will be confiscated and collected from Student Services at the end of the day.
- We will provide all Year 7’s with the “M” hat and encourage
them to wear only this par3cular hat if possible. Reminder:
- WHITE UNDERSHIRTS only, long sleeve or short sleeve
- No hoodies, no thongs, no ugg boots

- Parents are encouraged to aRend events at the school such as parents
nights, recitals and spor3ng carnivals. Students may say they are embarrassed but will oLen secretly be quite pleased - especially if you can remain subtly anonymous.

Parent and Student Twilight Picnic 2018
- There will be a Lower School Picnic held in the Lower
School Quad in the third week of term 1.
- This event is a get together, BYO picnic to enable
parents, students and siblings in Year 7,8,9 to get together, meet each other as well as some of the teachers here at Melville SHS.
- Please place in your diary as an upcoming event and I
will place a reminder on Connect at the start of the new year.
