  2. • Our role is the make the process of adjus3ng to High School as safe and as comfortable as possible. • While most students will find the shiL exci3ng, a few will no doubt find high school quiet challenging. • We consider this to be a joint effort between ourselves and you – the hardworking parent.

  3. Preparing Your Child for High School

  4. • You can help before school begins by: • Prac3cal – Allowing your child to undertake more prac3cal skills such as making their own lunch and breakfast, washing and ironing their own uniforms and general chores around the house. Social – You can help support their resilience by understanding that setbacks are a learning experience, that they will be required to take turns, say hello and use appropriate manners Academic – That they have a study area – Learn and use teachers names

  5. Year 7s Primary to High School The differences – Size of the school – Size and number of the students – Number of teachers – Play – Change - new people - new hormones – Student Services

  7. • Specialist Programs in: – Avia3on – Graphic Design Media – Netball – Academic Extension – Music in Focus Selec3on via school based tes3ng and interview (plus audi3on for music and a folio for GDM) Placement is for four years (7-10) with pathways into Yr 11 and 12 based on subject selec3on.

  8. Aviation The Aviation program has two qualified teachers with industry experience, commercial pilot’s licences and flight instructor qualifications. A purpose-built Aviation Centre has two flight simulators and the remainder of the course time is spent at airports and in the skies. The course caters for the learning needs of all students, from those seeking a career in aviation, science or engineering to other aviation-related pursuits.

  10. Netball As one of only four schools endorsed by Netball WA, this program offers your child the opportunity to excel at the sport they love. Commi^ed teachers and coaches are former state and na3onal level representa3ves or coaches. The players compete in local and Interna3onal compe33ons and students come to understand the level of commitment required to achieve success.

  11. Music in Focus The Music course offers SIM lessons in flute, classical guitar, electric and bass guitar, percussion, brass, clarinet and saxophone. Students are required to join the Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Junior or Senior Classical Guitar Ensemble and/or the Vocal Ensemble. They rehearse once a week before or aLer school. Each band/ensemble is engaged in many performances throughout the year.

  12. Academic Extension Course AEC offers students from Years 7 to 10 a diverse range of extended academic opportuni3es. AEC students make up the top mainstream class in each year group. The Program has two parts, Mathema3cs and Science being one and English and Humani3es & Social Science being the other. Students can be accepted into one or both. Students selected are in separate extension classes for these subjects from day one.

Melville Senior High School • Our high school is bigger than your child’s primary school, with approximately 1,400+ students. • Although the Year 7s will be integrated within the school so they can access specialist classrooms and facili3es, they will also have a dedicated area for lunch and recess. • This will include dedicated handball and basketball facili3es, as well as a beau3ful sculptured garden in which to relax.

  14. Academic Week In Year 7 - • 4 hours each of Maths, Science English and HASS. • 2 hours of language (for 6 months) • 2 hours and Physical Educa3on • 1 hour Health Educa3on • 2 hours Op3ons for 6 months / 4 hours Op3ons for 6 months (alterna3ng with language)

Extra Curricular Interschool Sports including: Swimming, athle3cs, soccer program, Netball, Basketball, hockey, rugby, AFL Fun ac3vi3es at recess and lunch such as Dodge ball, Spelling Bees, Soccer, basketball, handball. Cadets Deba3ng Numero maths compe33on A variety of other ac3vi3es throughout the year.

  17. • Session 2A : • Is an extra 20 mins, not another subject. • It has no charge in your contribu3ons and charges. • It allows the school to either: – Give extra 3me to a subject, – Use the 3me for school and year group assemblies, – Use the 3me for special guest speakers – Use 3me for Tuesday early close for staff mee3ngs

  20. • Fees Charges and Contribu3ons: • New fee sheets posted out if classes have changed • If you have already paid - adjustments for remaining money to be paid or collected and will be reflected on new fee sheets. • Please ask at the front office for informa3on on the $350 Secondary Assistance Scheme.

  21. • Melville Senior High School is the School of Choice: • For the local and wider community • Highly sort aLer enrolment • Email is increasingly the main form of communica3on with the school • Challenges for Melville SHS are: – Not informing administra3on of changes to students health forms, current home issues and behaviour of student – Not informing administra3on of changes to address and email – False informa3on given at enrolment – Parents and students found to be falsifying enrolment informa3on will be asked to a^end their local High School

  22. • Homework and Study Sessions: • Year 7, 8 and 9 students have the opportunity to receive extra help during supervised aLerschool classes • They can use the 3me to work on homework, assignments or prepara3on for exams in the MESH (Maths, English, Science and HASS classes) • Schedule to be confirmed via CONNECT • The P & C are kindly providing sandwiches and muffins each session.

  23. • Homework: • Year 7s are expected to complete homework and/or revision nightly for each subject taught that day. • This should be approximately one hour per night , five nights a week. • We have exams in Years 7-12 • In CONNECT you can find the schedule for assignments, tests, inves3ga3ons and exams for each of your child's classes

  24. • iPads or Mac Books • Thankyou for purchasing and providing iPads or Mac books for your children • Year 7 students will be using them in all class ac3vi3es including; classroom rules, calculators, note taking from textbooks, book review notes, word, pages, taking photos in Science, English and elec3ve classes. • We strongly recommend purchasing a very protecIve case and taking out insurance for your child’s device as the school cannot take responsibility for any damage to a device at school.

  25. • In the first week all students should be online and able to access the web and interac3ve apps. • Please keep an eye on games added to your child’s iPads they can distract from educa3on both at home and in class.

  26. • Mobile Phones: • Not seen and not heard in class • If it is used in class it will be confiscated by staff • Once confiscated , kept in locked storage in student services • Students to collect at the end of the day. • Third strike parents will be asked to personally collect it from Student Services. • Please remember all items of value bought to school are the responsibility of the student/parent. • Please refer to the 2018 Informa3on Handbook or the Student Diary

  27. Diary • The diary is a very important organisational tool for the students • Please encourage them to use it correctly • It is also a useful tool for parent communication

  28. Uniforms • All students must be wearing correct Melville Senior High School Uniform when they are at school. • Hats are by choice, however, very much encouraged in sport classes – no rude, offensive or illegal mo3ves, and decora3ons, they will be confiscated and collected from Student Services at the end of the day. • We will provide all Year 7’s with the “M” hat and encourage them to wear only this par3cular hat if possible. Reminder: • WHITE UNDERSHIRTS only, long sleeve or short sleeve • No hoodies, no thongs, no ugg boots
