FAQ’S

  • How many classes do I need to take?
  • You need to select 4 core classes (English, math, science, and history) and 4 elective
  • classes. Remember that band, athletics, and Hi-Steppers count as 2 electives.
  • What classes are double-blocked (scheduled each day)?
  • Band and athletics, with the exception of tennis, cheer, and non-Nitro swimmers are double

blocked.

  • Can I “double up” on a core class (ex. take 2 math classes)?
  • You may not take 2 core classes in the same subject area without current teachers approval.
  • Can I have an off period?
  • Freshman may have an off period either at the beginning or end of the day. However, you

must have parent approval and your own transportation to or from school. Note that students must be off campus during their off period.

  • Will I have study hall on my schedule?
  • We do not offer a study hall in high school. If you are struggling in a course we encourage

you to attend morning tutorials.

FAQ’S Continued…

  • What if I want to change my schedule once school starts?
  • Standard core and elective courses may be changed during the first 10 days of school (schedule change

request form available in the counseling center.)

  • Dropping or leveling down from a PAP or AP level course will be done between the 3rd and 4th week of school

(after T1 progress reports). Remember, your grade will follow you to your new course!

  • How many volunteer hours are required for graduation?
  • Volunteer hours are not required to graduate. However, students that earn 150 hours while in high school will

earn the Principal’s Volunteer Service Award and chord at graduation. In addition, volunteer hours are useful

  • n college applications.
  • Can I have 2 athletic periods?
  • Students may only have 1 athletic period on their schedule at a time. This is due to UIL eligibility rules. If you

do participate in 2 sports, select the sport that occurs first.

  • What if I just want to learn to play a sport?
  • Our athletic periods are designated for students that have prior knowledge in the sport and have intentions of

trying out for the team.

  • When are athletic tryouts?
  • Many sports hold tryouts during the summer – contact the coach or visit DSHS athletic website for more

information and available Summer Camps.

When Should I Have This Done?

We will be back to meet with you on Thursday, March 2nd. All of your classes either need to be selected by then on your paper or you may go ahead and enter them in Skyward. BRING YOUR ACADEMY APPLICATION BACK WITH YOU! This is a part of your file at the high school. It is mandatory part of registration!
