Searching for Scholarships

  • PCHS website - local and search engines.
  • Your own online research
  • Check with parents’/guardians’ employer and

applicable businesses and organizations (banks, insurance agency, churches, alumni associations, etc.).

Merit-Based Scholarships

1. Apply EARLY to the college or university before the deadline. 2. Colleges and universities will make decisions based on merit (ACT/SAT, GPA, etc).* We do not rank at PCHS. 3. Compare benefits and costs. *also check with your prospective college/university for competitive and departmental scholarships (these deadlines typically differ from merit-based awards)

Bright Flight Scholarship

  • For students scoring in the top 3% of Missouri students on

ACT or SAT

  • Amount can change year to year - depending on state funds
  • Eligible students will receive a letter from MDHE
  • Bright Flight scholarship may be renewed annually

A+ Scholarship Program

  • A+ will pay tuition at a 2 year college, technical school,
  • r trade school in Missouri.
  • Must meet all requirements.
  • Some 4 year colleges and universities may offer

scholarships in varying amounts even if they do not accept A+ for tuition. For more information and how to qualify, contact Bev Hartland, A+ Coordinator.

Scholarship Application Tips

  • Follow all guidelines on the application.
  • Type and proofread your applications - have

someone else review it also.

  • Pay attention to detail!
  • Turn in applications early - do not wait until

the last minute. Deadlines are strictly enforced.

* Pay EXTRA close attention if you are copying and pasting information or an essay - make the information specific to the scholarship to which you are applying.

  • Create a calendar of scholarship deadlines and pace

yourself.

  • Store scholarship information and essays in a file,

Drive or on a flash drive.

  • Draft a resume to have ready for applications.

Scholarship Resume - What to Include

  • School activities, including leadership positions
  • Community service or activities
  • Weighted or honors courses
  • GPA and ACT score (may also be part of application)
  • Jobs and/or volunteer work
  • Obstacles you have overcome
  • Financial need

Letters of Recommendation

  • If possible, ask someone relevant to the scholarship for which you are applying.
  • If asking for a letter from a counselor, complete the online form.

  • Be punctual and considerate. Always give the recommender at least 2 weeks notice.
  • Provide all necessary information that you would like included (can include your

resume).

  • Provide stamps and envelopes if needed.
  • Thank the recommender.

After receiving a scholarship

  • ALWAYS send a thank you note to the organization or

person granting the scholarship.

  • Consider thanking them in person or attending a meeting if

appropriate.

  • Be aware if you need to provide information in order to

receive funds (class schedule, etc). Make sure you are aware

  • f what is needed well ahead of time (do not wait until

college starts in the fall to ask if you have questions)

  • Note if the scholarship is renewable and be sure you are

aware of how to request renewal.
