How can I I help my chil ild to make sure th they are Nursery ry re ready?

  • Talk to your child when playing together. Have fun with nursery rhymes and songs especially those

with actions.

  • Encourage your child to listen to different sounds, such as cars, sirens, aeroplanes, dogs barking,

loud and quiet sounds. This will help your child’s listening skills.

  • Talk about things as they happen- What items you are putting into your shopping trolley, what you

can see from the car/bus, window, the order they put their clothes on etc.

  • Listen carefully and give your child time to finish what they want to say. Take turns to speak and try

to answer their questions.

How can I I help my chil ild to make sure th they are Nursery ry ready?

  • Increase your child’s vocabulary by giving them choices, e.g ‘would you like juice or milk?’
  • Encourage them to play and interact with others.
  • Try to have some special time with your child each day to play with their toys and share

picture books.

  • Limit television time. Try to watch television together, choose programmes that have been

designed for your child’s age group, so you can talk about the programme together.

  • Allow them to put their on their own clothes and encourage them to try the fastenings.
  • Make the journey along the ‘Road to Nursery’ fun!

What is the ‘Foundation Stage’?

  • This is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school as well as

preparing them for their future learning and successes. From when your child is born up until the age of 5, their early years experience should be happy, active, exciting, fun and secure; and support their development, care and learning needs.

  • The Foundation Stage covers the seven main areas of young children’s development

and learning. They are grouped into two main categories prime areas and specific areas of learning.

  • The prime areas of learning are important because they lay the foundations for

children’s success in all other areas of learning and life.

Reading at home

  • The more chances your child has to enjoy reading and writing at home

the better. Little and often works well.

  • During the Foundation Stage your child will have the opportunity to

bring a reading book and a library book home to share with you.

  • To help to keep our books clean and safe your child needs to bring their

book to school every day in a Mill Hill Primary Academy book bag.
