Knebworth Primary and Nursery School What is the EYFS?

The EYFS sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted registered early years providers must follow the EYFS statutory documents and guidance. Our Nursery and Reception classes are part of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

How we learn

We understand that the Characteristics of Effective Learning are critical in understanding how children learn. The characteristics help us to see when children are learning. Children are learning when they are: Engaged, Motivated and Thinking.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Knebworth Primary and Nursery School

What we learn

There are 7 areas of learning, 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. Prime areas underpin all areas of learning however not one of these areas can be delivered in isolation from the others as they are all equally important. All areas are delivered through a balance of adult led and child-initiated activities. In each area there are Early Learning Goals that define the expectations for most children to reach by the end of the Foundation Stage.

We have found this picture to be the best way to describe a day in the life of

  • ne of our EYFS children! We know that children learn best through exploring

and it is necessary to make ‘good mistakes’ time and time again in order to accomplish the skills they are acquiring.

Transition

We realise this year our transition will be different to previous years. Whilst we wait for government guidance, these are things you can expect from us as we make the transition as smooth as possible:

  • A welcome pack which should cover the main queries to starting school
  • This PowerPoint which introduces you to the main outline of our school

and the school day and the main people who will be in contact with you and your child as well as a ‘Meet the Team’ video

  • An opportunity for you to visit the school with your child in July, for your

child to familiarise themselves with the classroom layout and to meet their teacher

  • Phone calls with parents to discuss individual queries
  • An ‘all about me’ form from the class teacher to introduce themselves to

your child

  • An ‘all about me’ form for your child to complete and to bring to school in

September

School lunches are free for all children from Reception to Year 2 as part of the universal free school meals scheme. Please see the letter in the pack about eligibility to claim free school meals as this is different to the universal offer and is important to claim. Children are also able to bring in a healthy home packed lunch (no fizzy drinks, sweets or chocolate). Please note we are a ‘nut free’ school. Reception children have dedicated Midday Supervisors (MSA’s) who are there to support and look after your child during lunchtime. The children also get to go into the hall for lunch first, ensuring it is a calm and quiet environment for them to settle into school life.

Home Learning

In order to support your child’s early reading we do suggest that you read with your child at least four times a week. This can be the words and sounds that have been sent home, early reading books and of course picture books that you enjoy together. Whilst we do not set formal home learning we love to hear what your child has been doing at home. Therefore we have put together suggestions which will also help us build up a bigger picture of your child’s learning.

Home Learning When to complete
