  7. Knebworth Primary and Nursery School What is the EYFS? The EYFS sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted registered early years providers must follow the EYFS statutory documents and guidance. Our Nursery and Reception classes are part of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

  8. Knebworth Primary and Nursery School How we learn We understand that the Characteristics of Effective Learning are critical in understanding how children learn. The characteristics help us to see when children are learning. Children are learning when they are: Engaged, Motivated and Thinking.

  9. Knebworth Primary and Nursery School What we learn There are 7 areas of learning, 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. Prime areas underpin all areas of learning however not one of these areas can be delivered in isolation from the others as they are all equally important. All areas are delivered through a balance of adult led and child-initiated activities. In each area there are Early Learning Goals that define the expectations for most children to reach by the end of the Foundation Stage.

  10. Knebworth Primary and Nursery School We have found this picture to be the best way to describe a day in the life of one of our EYFS children! We know that children learn best through exploring and it is necessary to make ‘good mistakes’ time and time again in order to accomplish the skills they are acquiring.

  11. Knebworth Primary and Nursery School Transition We realise this year our transition will be different to previous years. Whilst we wait for government guidance, these are things you can expect from us as we make the transition as smooth as possible: • A welcome pack which should cover the main queries to starting school • This PowerPoint which introduces you to the main outline of our school and the school day and the main people who will be in contact with you and your child as well as a ‘Meet the Team’ video • An opportunity for you to visit the school with your child in July, for your child to familiarise themselves with the classroom layout and to meet their teacher • Phone calls with parents to discuss individual queries • An ‘all about me’ form from the class teacher to introduce themselves to your child • An ‘all about me’ form for your child to complete and to bring to school in September
