Process for Selection

All Students currently in grades 8-11 will choose their courses and course levels. We encouraging that the course selection facilitation be placed in the hands of students and parents. We want all students to challenge themselves, but we also want to m ake sure that their placem ent in courses is appropriate, realistic and is consistent with their past levels of achievement and effort.

January 24, 2014 Dear Students and Parents: Middleborough High School will soon begin the Aspen/X2 online course selection process for the 2014-2015 academic school year. On Friday, February 7, 2014 during advisory homeroom, students will be given a computer-generated access code unique to themselves, as well as access to our Program of Studies, and instructions for course selection in the Aspen System. The online course selection instructions and Program of Studies will also be made available on the MHS

  • website. We are hosting a Program of Studies/Aspen Scheduling Information Night on

Tuesday, February 11th at 6:30pm in the MHS Auditorium. Mr. Branagan and the Guidance Department will provide a step by step overview of the online selection process as well as review pertinent academic information, including any changes to the Program of Studies for the next school year. If you do not have internet access at home or you have questions regarding this process, please join us at 5:30pm on February 11th, in the MHS Library with your Aspen code. On February 12, 13, and 14 the guidance department will be set up in the cafeteria during lunch to assist students with the course selection process. Students must select courses totaling a minimum of 40 credits to complete their schedule. For most students, that will mean five major courses including: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Foreign Language, P.E. and 15 credits of elective courses (some may also be graduation requirements) such as: Fine Arts and Technology. It is recommended that students select enough elective credits to surpass the 40 credit minimum to help students to get their desired electives. MHS Graduation Requirements can be found on the beginning pages of the Program of Studies. Our scheduling methodology at MHS is student-driven. This means current Middleborough High School students will choose the courses and course levels that they will take. Students currently in the 8th grade attending Nichols Middle School will have recommendations made for him/her in Aspen by their current teachers. We strongly encourage parent/guardian involvement to help students make appropriate course and level selections. We want all students to challenge themselves, but we also want to make sure that their placement in courses is appropriate, realistic and is consistent with their past levels of achievement and effort. Students’ course selections will be reviewed by content-specific teachers and your guidance counselor to ensure appropriateness. Recommendations of courses and levels may be made by the high school staff based on student’s demonstrated progress and performance. In the event that staff opposes a student-selected course

  • r level, a meeting may be scheduled to discuss the best option for the student as a team.

All students must complete the online Course Selection process via the Aspen/X2 program during the week of February 10 – February 21, 2014. Your Guidance Counselor will then

ENTERING COURSE REQUESTS ONLINE IN ASPEN X2

Middleborough High School Course Selection Information for the 2014-2015 school year. Middleborough High School has adopted a new system for you to request all core subject area courses in addition to electives to complete your schedule. You will be entering your course requests online in the Aspen/X2 system. This online process will replace the paper course selection sheets that were used in the past. See attached instructions to guide you through the process. The most important thing to know is the deadline: Every student is required to enter course requests in Aspen/X2 by the end of day, Friday, February 21, 2014. Meeting this deadline is critical for giving yourself the best chance of getting the courses you want. Here is an outline of the steps you must take:

  • 1. Carefully review the Program of Studies for all course and elective descriptions. The

POS can be found on the high school’s website. This is where you will find the correct sequence of courses, course descriptions, and MHS graduation requirements.

  • 2. Log into your Aspen/X2 student account (user ID/password provided below; also

available in NMS’ and MHS’ Guidance Offices) and begin selecting core courses, the level of interest, and electives of choice.

  • 3. Confer with your parent(s)/guardian(s) to decide your course selections and levels.
  • 4. Week of February 10 – February 21, 2014, log onto your Aspen/X2 student account

and enter your course selections.

  • 5. If no password is indicated below, this means that you have reset your password. You

will need to retrieve it by going to “forgot password” on the Aspen/X2 log-in page. If your account has been disabled please email Robin Pilla to be reactivated: rpilla@middleboro.k12.ma.us

  • 6. If you would like more information on this process please attend our Program of

Studies night on February 11, 2014 at 6:30pm. Beginning at 5:30 you will have access to computers in the MHS library if you do not have access to the internet at home. Last Name, First Name Website:
