First Grade Vocabulary Enhancement Program

Our Program Step by Step

Volunteer Guide Contents

Step 1-Connecting with the student (3-5 mins) Step 2-Review the rules of the program (1 min) Step 3-Introduce or review the read aloud book (1-2 mins) Step 4-Introduce vocabulary (3-5 mins) Step 5- Volunteer reads the book aloud until the recommended stopping point (7-9 mins) Step 6-Review selected vocabulary words and paste into word journal (1-2 mins) Step 7-Write a sentence and illustrate vocabulary word (4-6 mins) Step 8- Vocabulary review and praise (3-5 minutes)

Second Grade Reading Fluency

My First Session Making a connection with your student is super important to build

• trust. Once established, learning can begin to take place. Remember to

be the nicest person they see all week and look your student in the eyes during each session. This helps them understand that you’re happy to be with them! Below are sample questions you can ask your student. Making time together well-spent undoubtedly will foster future

• conversations. Additional questions are available on the Foundation

• What is your age and birthday?
• What is your teacher’s name and your favorite subject in school?
• Do you have a best friend and do you like recess?
• Do you play sports and do you have a favorite TV show?
• What do you do on the weekends?
• What is the silliest thing you have ever said or done?

Assigned Students – Teachers are given a set of criteria, which is listed below, to register 2nd grade students who would best be served by the Read2Succeed fluency program. During your first session, any student who greatly under or over preforms the following task should be replaced by the next session with a student who would meet the criteria for the program:

• Correct words per minute (cwpm) on passage 101

is below 20 or over 50 If you are concerned that your student(s) might not be the best fit for the program, first talk to the teacher regarding the student’s cwpm score. Then, ask for another student who meets the criteria below. Also, it is suggested that the student pairs be within 10 cwpm of each other for reading fluency. (Please inform a Read2Succeed program manager if you are assigned a different student so we are able to maintain accurate records.)

Student Criteria - Which students should be selected for the 2nd Grade Reading Fluency Program? Candidates are: Students who are reading between 20-50 cwpm; and Students who meet grade level expectations on most phonics/phonological awareness concepts and skills; and Students who would be comfortable working with an adult and have no significant behavioral issues; and Students who speak English and attend school regularly Level Two Passages – Once a student or student pair is reading above 70 cwpm, it is recommended that you move to level two passages starting with passage 201 – Animal Habitats Introduction. Reading Comprehension Questions - Once a student or student pair is reading above 70 cwpm, it is recommended that volunteers spend time asking students article-specific questions for discussion found in the folder insert behind the student log. This helps students tremendously with reading comprehension skills and addresses another critical point along the reading pathway.

Step 1: Establish a personal connection. Step 2: Review the three components of reading fluency. Step 3: Model through the day’s passage reading aloud. Step 4: Skim for difficult words. Step 5: Echo read. Step 6: Choral read all together. Step 7: Timed reading Step 8: Games and independent reading time.

My Last Session Prior to ending the program, begin to prepare the student for the last session by talking honestly ahead of time (2 to 3 weeks prior to ending the program). Use a visual calendar each week to show how many sessions are remaining. Revisit the student’s achievements and remember the good times you shared together. Students enjoy reviewing their student graphs and rereading books or replaying games that brought enjoyment for all. Reporting Fluency Results - It is critical that all volunteers take a moment to report fluency scores on our website at the conclusion of the program. The fluency form can be found on

following information will need to be supplied: Volunteer name and school Student(s) first and last name Beginning passage number (101), beginning date, and student’s cwpm score Ending passage number (101), ending date, and student’s cwpm score Number of weeks student(s) had a cwpm score Student Materials - During the last session, you are welcome to give the student folder to each student to take home. Encourage each student to continue practicing any remaining passages with family or friends. If you haven’t already, give the Magic Tree House books (one per student) as a gift.
