  7. The NSR: mv Audax The Audax(ARC7) , have arrived on January 4, 2017 in the port of Sabetta, on the Yamal Peninsula. The ship departed Qingdao, China, in November, passing first through the Bering Strait, and then westbound along the NSR, where it was escorted for part of the way by Russian icebreakers. 7 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. 9. The NSR: Safety 9 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. Energizing The World

  10. The NSR: Is it safe? • On September 10, Arctic sea ice extent stood at 4.14 million square kilometers (1.60 million square miles). This appears to have been the lowest extent of the year and is tied with 2007 as the second lowest extent on record. This year’s minimum extent is 750,000 square kilometers (290,000 square miles) above the record low set in 2012 and is well below the two standard deviation range for the 37-year satellite record. Satellite data show extensive areas of open water in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, and in the Laptev and East Siberian seas. • Trend is clear 10 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. Energizing The World

  11. Low sea ice extent continues in both poles Climate change is causing the ice covering sections of the Arctic Ocean to recede. This enables greater use of the Northern Sea Route. 11 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. Energizing The World

  15. NSR – new generation of Ice-breakers A new icebreaker is expected to commence its operation in 2018. The designed width of the icebreaker will constitute 34 metres which will allow the large Aframax-type vessels to safely follow the icebreaker through the water passage. 15 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. 24. NSR – Customs There are 21 customs point in Russian Arctic zone – 21 sea, 6 – air, 3 – auto. According to customs authorities in the Yamal-Nenets region the value of the goods customs-declared at Sabetta in 2016 had a fivefold increase from the previous year. The increase comes as construction proceeds at the nearby Yamal LNG plant. A total of 120 ships with goods subjected to customs declaration docked in Sabetta in 2016, more than twice the number of 2015. They delivered a total of 505,000 tons of goods with a value of $5.2 billion. The shiploads destined from China, Belgium, Germany, Egypt, Korea, the USA, Finland and Spain. 24 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. Energizing The World

  25. NSR –Trend Historically, brisk growth of shipping on the NSR seaways was, first of all, connected with the commercial exploration of the High North regions. Icebreaker fleet and special-purpose transport vessels successfully carried out and continue to perform assignments to transport natural resources and to deliver equipment and commodities to the areas of hard access. At present the main forecasts of growth in the scopes of transportations in the Arctic are also related to the exploration of new fields and exportation of raw materials from the Arctic shelf. Also the NSR presents opportunities for international shipping as a transit route between Western Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The unique geographical position of the NSR allows significant reduction of the shipping route under the transcontinental transportations. 25 IAPH Bali 2017 | Enabling Trade. Energizing The World
