British Ports Association

 100 port members, owning and managing more than 350 ports, harbours and

piers around the UK

 Included in this are 44 of the busiest 50 UK fishing ports by official

government landing statistics, including all of the top ten fishing ports

 Some ports specialise in fishing with markets and facilities, while at others

fish landings supplement cargo operations

 The BPA has a committee for fishing ports which meets twice a year at

different port locations around the UK

 This committee regularly invites the EMFF fisheries grant awarding bodies to

give presentations and generally follows CFP developments

UK ports – summary

  • Collectively UK ports handle just under 500m
  • Import driven
  • Oil and gas = roughly 40% of UK cargoes
  • Unitised – importance of Ro/Ro
  • Many ports are ‘vertically integrated’, handling the cargoes themselves
  • Also a large number of smaller ports specialising in leisure and fishing activities
slide-4
SLIDE 4

UK ports policy

 Ports entirely independent to make commercial and

financial decisions

 No national strategic plans, no public subsidy, apart from

EMFF…

 Devolution – separate but similar ports policies for England,

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

 EU fisheries grants awarded by devolved governments

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Port Ownership

 Private sector industry  Three types – Privatised, Trust and Municipal  Port authorities and cargo handling – mixture  120 cargo handling ports of varying sizes  600 ports of all size and type around UK
