SCHOOLS' CUP PRESENTATION
Hoping to follow in the footsteps of "Siggy's Cup", which has enjoyed great success since 2007, the "School's Cup" frst took of in 2013. This sailing event is intended for the youth of Luxembourg and the Greater Region and will eventually extend to the youth from all 27 countries of the European
- Community. Sailing has been chosen as an ideal vector through which the
humanist ideals of tolerance, respect, self-awareness, courage, and humility can be promoted. These values will be (re)discovered through nautcal actvites and events. This sailing competton is open to teenagers and young adults; whether in school, an apprentceship, a reinserton programme or those with special needs (Alan, Krank Kanner, Ligue HMC). This project supports children of all backgrounds, including those with social or physical disabilites. In this way it fosters beter understanding of diferent realites and encourages social integraton. This event, under the patronage of the Ministry of Educaton, sponsored by the Maritme Afairs and the Commercial Chamber, through its Commercial School, Luxembourg enables young people between the ages of 14 to 19 to discover the values of sailing through a full week of racing, in habitable sailboats of approximately 40 feet, and does not require prior experience.

Mission
This experience, far from being a passive sailing ride, is an actvity where the partcipants themselves take an actve role in operatng the vessels in a new discipline and in an unknown, sometmes even hostle environment which requires the crew to frst accept their limits, before being able to
- vercome them. It is in this perspectve that the actvity creates a real
learning experience and responds to specifc training objectves. Onboard, the situaton requires actve and rapid communicaton as well as the development of methods for efcient collaboraton, in search of maximum performance as a team. Each partcipant onboard will be delegated a specifc role. It is therefore not a passive cruise experience but an actvity where every individual assumes a defned responsibility (helmsman, sail trimmer…). To fulfll his or her responsibilites, each member of the crew must be aware of the role of his fellow teammates in order to interact in a coherent synchronized manner.
Educational objectives
Individual responsibility: accountability and performance in achieving his or her specifc task, recogniton of personal physical limits, composure and control of one’s emotons. Collectve responsibility: the individual’s own success is interlinked to that
- f the team.
Awareness and respect of personal limits and those of others: mentally (in terms of understanding), emotonally (in terms of stress management, anxiety ...) and physically (in terms of endurance, resilience ...). Obligaton to learn through hands-on experience (learning by doing) or through the practce of kinesiology. Tolerance: acceptance of one’s errors and those of others. Learning from mistakes is an integral part of this project and of one’s personal development in general. Respect for the decisions and actons of group members. Bravery and modesty in the face of the forces of nature, in a hostle natural
- environment. The difculty to control and manage the environment
requires adaptaton. Competton is a tool for personal development that leads to a beter understanding of oneself. Afer each round the choice of useful behaviors and the rejecton of inadequate ones will form the basis for defning a code of conduct which will serve to liberate each individual in the full expression of his or her
- talents. This code must be elaborated along with the procedures, roles,
- bjectves and strategy.
Educational project
The “Schools’ cup” is an educatonal tool for schools eager to deliver an educaton open to the realites of the world. Specifcally designed to promote motvaton, teamwork and synchronizaton within three areas of development: collectve, interpersonal and individual. It involves the gradual progression from a group of individuals into a fully functoning team and ofers a truly rewarding experience for the future of these high school students. Indeed, to carry out this project, the students, under the supervision of an adult spokesperson of their school (teacher, guidance counselor, parent), will be encouraged, but not obliged, to: Ashore beforehand pool together their intellect and / or physical abilites and recognize that it pays more to play as a team than playing solo; establish a budget to cover the costs; implement a communicaton strategy to seek fnancial partners and to contact the local media; nominate among the crew and for each boat a "journalist" and / or "photographer" who will make daily updates to the website for their respectve school before, during and afer the event; set up a team who will be responsible for managing the content of t he website created for the occasion; itnerary of the course may be used by a maths teacher at any stage. Indeed, topics such as longitudes and lattudes, degrees, and cardinal positons can be easier to learn on a nautcal chart using a concrete real-life example. It will also be the perfect opportunity to learn how to measure the speed of a ship in knots relatve to the wind or to incorporate lessons on the various internatonal measurements into the mathematcs programme; geography classes could incorporate a study of the region travelled; history classes as well; natural science classes could include an analysis and study of the fauna and fora. Ashore during the event The team ashore could also play an important “navigator” role. This team could then, under the guidance of an instructor or teacher, analyze the weather conditons and transmit this informaton to the team at sea. Info and photos taken that are sent to communicate the team’s fndings could serve as teaching material in diferent classes. At sea during the event and under the leadership of the skipper The main sailing actvity is intended to be an experience of initaton, training, and taking ownership by beginners (or non beginners alike) in the actvites onboard the yachts. Rather than being a passive ride, it is an actvity where the partcipants themselves take the actve role in operatng the vessels. In additon, they will be called to: decode both electronic and paper marine charts; take into account movement parameters (boat/wind/tme);
- rient themselves using a compass ;
respect the itnerary and the tme alloted; partcipate in meal preparaton, in cleaning responsibilites and in setng up a system of internal organizaton specifc to each crew.
Crews
Each team will be composed of either 6 or 7 students of the same school under the command of a responsible skipper and a co-skipper. Both will ideally be teachers, members of the school community (psychologist, nurse, secretary, manager...) or parents. Info@sailingpassion.lu 5/13 Tel : +352 661 29 01 65
September 2015 The skipper must have a valid permit and sufcient sailing experience (as supported by a resumé). However, if a skipper is not available within the educatonal establishment, skippers will be provided by the event
- rganizer.
