The Provincial Standing Committee on education reforms identified several educational issues such as:

  • Approx 7.6 of the BC population is currently receiving income assistance
  • Fully 84% of them have not completed grade twelve
  • However, Grade 12 will not be sufficient to meet the future workforce needs:
  • “Employment projections estimate that more than 70% of the projected job
  • penings by 2013 will require post secondary completion.”

Post secondary education has two positive effects for the provincial economy:

1. Produces qualified individuals able to secure employment and contribute in providing government services. 2. Helps reduce the number of people needing social assistance.

Education in the 21st century

A 2003 study by the Alberta Ministry of

Advanced education found that:

  • a high school graduate can expect to earn

$30,888 for full-time, year-round work

  • a person with a bachelor’s degree earns

$43,510

  • someone with an advanced degree $51,914
slide-7
SLIDE 7
  • Unemployment among trades is half that of the rest of

the population

  • A 2007 survey of grads from the Northern Alberta

Institute of Technology (Edmonton) 5 years out found some trades grads salaries were higher than medical school students who graduated in the same year.

  • Trades also require credentials, but programs usually

last 1-2 years instead of the 4-10 years university degrees require.
