Guiana Shield eco-region

A unique ecostystem

  • 2 billion years old geological formation
  • Extend from Venezuela to Brazil
  • HFLD - High Forest Low Deforestation

(FC> 90%; Deforestation < 0.3%)

  • Thousands of creeks and rivers

(10-15% global freshwater resources)

  • Very rich biodiversity with many endemic species

This region plays a crictical role in mitigating climate change Project area partially covers the Guiana Shield

  • Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and the state of Amapá (Brazil)

Objectives

  • Prepare and support countries to REDD+
  • Facilitate and encourage regional dialogue & cooperation
  • Develop local capacities & share good practices

Thematic

  • Forest monitoring and inventory (carbon stock & forest cover)
  • Quantification and location of the drivers of deforestation and forest

degradation

  • Modelling deforestation to aid decision-making for future development

Monitoring of Gold Mining in the Guiana Shield

Coordination: ONFI/ONF Production:

  • SEMA (Amapá-Brazil)
  • ONF (French Guiana)
  • GFC (Guyana)
  • SBB (Suriname)

OBJECTIVES

  • Quantify impact on forest and waterways

for 2014 and compare with 2001-2008

  • Develop a regional robust method using
  • pen source software
  • Develop

local capacities and transfer technologies

  • Better understand the dynamic of gold

mining and help decision-making

Study outcomes

Significant boom of gold mining activities since 2001

  • ~ 138,000 ha deforested since 2001
  • ~ 9000 km of rivers directly impacted in 2014 (6.5 more than in 2001)

Deforestation intensity is increasing

  • Deforestation doubled between 2008-2014 compared to 2001-2008

(92.000 ha vs 46,000 ha)

Displacement to the west since 2008

  • High increase in Guyana and Suriname
  • Slow-down in French Guiana
  • Stabilization in the North of Amapa

Gold mining is strongly influenced by greenstone belt location Illegal gold mining occurs in protected areas

Conclusion

This regional collaborative study allowed to:

  • Highlight the alarming increase of gold mining in the region which has negative

impact on natural ressources (deforestation, water pollution, biodiversity)

  • Provide a common and shared view of gold mining at the regional level
  • Identify transboundary hotspot of gold mining activities
  • Develop a robust regional method for monitoring the impacts of gold mining
  • Serve both regional and national needs by developping local capacities as well as

regional dialogue Results:

  • Facilitate and encourage transboundary and

transnational dialogue

  • Help decision and policy making
  • Prove that cooperation & collaboration is possible
