Status: The RAW Exchange System is approximately 60% through the Preliminary Design Stage

  • P&ID, Modeling virtually complete
  • Design incorporates many lessons learned from NuMI, as well

as significant input from the current NuMI systems engineer, Dez Deshpande

  • Civil (NSCF) as well as all stakeholders involved with the

components have been involved with LBNF RAW Room and corresponding RAW Systems design thus far

NuMI system items kept:

  • Two modes for drain and fill maintained:
  • System off requiring full drain and make-up
  • on-the-fly ability to burp and make up a small quantity of RAW from

any particular system during operations

  • Containment
  • Tank still vents to a safe path for tritiated air to escape though

the TH complex

NuMI system items kept, cont.:

  • Redundant valves in the same locations
  • Transfer station and controls located outside of RAW Room for

access during beam operation

  • Transfer controls in a local station, with identical safety lockout,

requiring RSO or designee to be present for operation

  • Piping run overhead to maintain clear aisles

Modifications:

  • NuMI services 3 RAW systems: target + 2 horns
  • LBNF will service 5 RAW systems: target + 3 horns + shielding
  • NuMI uses extraction line LCW + house chilled water systems

for intermediate systems, not serviced by the Exchange System

  • LBNF will use a dedicated intermediate system, serviced by the

TH Exchange System, in a similar fashion to the NuMI Absorber Hall intermediate system in use

  • Both RAW capture and LCW make-up tanks have increased

volume to service 2 more RAW systems and greater volumes

  • Sufficient capture volume to ensure prolonged running between

services (raised from 300 to 1200 gallons)

  • Increased LCW fill tank, from 30 gallons to 200 gallons
