Qualifying Totals (QTs)

  • Topic has been debated since the beginning
  • Has the tipping point been reached with

1100+ lifters?

  • Raw Committee’s proposal in 2014 was

rejected in favor of QTs that had virtually no effect

slide-18
SLIDE 18

QT Proposal From Raw Committee

  • Step 1: Develop raw lifter classifications

– Developed with data from USAPL database between 2013-2015

  • Represents all (or most) raw performances in USAPL in

the given time period

– Lifter classification levels tied to various percentiles

  • Example: to achieve the Elite classification, lifter must

achieve a total that 2.5% or fewer lifters in the given weight class have achieved (in the past 3 years)

SLIDE 20

QT Proposal From Raw Committee

  • Step 2: Assign QTs

– QTs linked directly to various classification levels

  • Example: open lifters need to achieve Class 1 total

– QTs

  • Open: Class 1 (top 15%)
  • M1 and Jr: Class 2 (top 25%)
  • M2 and T3: Class 3 (top 50%)
  • M3 and T2: Class 4 (top 75%)
  • M4/M4+ and T1: Class 5 (top 90%)
slide-21
SLIDE 21

QT Proposal From Raw Committee

  • Raw Committee proposes to put these

classifications and QTs into effect in January, 2016 and have them apply for the 2016 Raw Nationals and beyond

– Due to time constraints, proposal will require Executive Committee approval to put into place without NGB approval

slide-22
SLIDE 22

QT Proposal: Advantages

  • Simple system that can easily be applied to all
  • System is objective, data-driven, and fair to all
  • System is easy to understand
  • Classifications/QTs can be updated every 3

years to reflect changing trends in performances nationwide

slide-23
SLIDE 23

QT Proposal: Effect on Raw Nationals

  • Current proposal will significantly cut down

number of lifters at Raw Nationals

  • Only higher caliber lifters will be able to

achieve required QTs

slide-24
SLIDE 24

QT Proposal: Effect on Raw Nationals

  • Based on performances at 2014 Raw

Nationals, these QTs would cut out:

– 36% of the females

  • Drops to 27% if 13 women within 5kg make it

– 28% of the males

  • Based on QTs reported for 2015 Raw

Nationals*, these QTs would cut out:

– 49% of the females – 42% of the males

* Note: Reported 2015 QTs do not necessarily represent true capabilities of lifters
