  2. TACHS  Admission to the Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens, Rockville Center or the Archdiocese of New York in 2019-2020 is determined in large part by the results of the TACHS exam administered on November 9 th 2019.  An examination fee of $65 is required.

  3. HOW TO REGISTER? • Internet registration is the card payment. Fee is $65. • Go to www.tachsinfo.com. (Between August 26 and October 21, 2019) • Click on the registration link to access the Registration form. • A 7-digit confirmation number, also known as the TACHS Number, will be provided once payment has been confirmed. It is recommended that you print the confirmation screen displayed at the end of the online registration process. If an email address is provided, a confirmation email will also be sent. preferred method of registration and requires a credit card.

  4. HOW MANY SCHOOLS CAN I APPLY TO? • The TACHS scores will only be sent to three schools of your choosing. Make sure you enter the correct school code, which can be found in the TACHS handbook. • Put schools in order of direct preference. • Admission and scholarship decisions are the responsibility of the individual high school. • Do not take CHEES test for Nassau county.

  5. WHEN IS THE TEST? • In the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens it is on Saturday -November 9, 2019. • The test begins at 9:00 AM. Students should be at the test site by 8:15 AM. • The test ends at approximately 12:00 PM. Actual test time is approximately two hours with time for directions and pauses between subtests. There are no official breaks. • All students should have – Three or four sharpened Number 2 pencils with erasers – the Admit Card NO CALCULATORS, WATCHES, CELL PHONES, ELECTRONIC DEVICES. NO NOTES, BOOKS, SCRAP PAPER.

  6. SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS The Eligibility Form is in the TACHS Student Handbook, page 4. ONLY extended time will be offered as an accommodation. Form must be submitted by October 11, 2019.   7. SCHOLARSHIPS All scholarship information is found on the website for each high school. Most high schools use the results of TACHS to award scholarships. The Mary Louis Academy – register by Nov. 7; exam on Nov. 13. and St. John’s Prep – register online; test Nov. 7. Please check the websites.

  8. PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATIONS • Open an account on myschools.nyc • All information will be available on this website. • In the High School Admissions Guide book – a map of each borough so that you can see where the public high schools are located. • Applications are due December 2.

  10. WHAT ARE THE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS (SHS)? There are eight testing SHS — apply by taking the Specialized High Schools Admissions T est (SHSAT).  The Bronx High School of Science Bronx  High School of American Studies at Lehman College  The Brooklyn Latin School Brooklyn  Brooklyn Technical High School  Stuyvesant High School Manhattan  High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at the City College of NY  Queens High School for the Sciences at York College Queens  Staten Island Technical High School Staten Island There is one audition SHS — apply to dance, instrumental music, fine arts, drama, technical theater, or vocal music by auditioning or submitting a portfolio.  Fiorello H. PREPARE FOR THE SHSAT Read the Specialized High Schools Student Handbook Take SHSAT practice tests  Test dates and locations on pages 4 – 5.  Get to know the Specialized High Schools Plan your time: Test is 1 80 minutes — no breaks.  Students with an extended time accommodation: test is 360 minutes —  two 1 5-minute breaks. Put final answers on the answer sheet, not the test booklet. Put your school preference order on your test ticket and answer sheet. The choices you put on the answer sheet are FINAL. schools.nyc.gov/High 11

PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATION • Specialized High Schools – 8 schools – Bronx HS of Science; Stuyvesant (M); Brooklyn T ech; HS of American Studies in Lehman College (BX); Brooklyn Latin School; HS for Math, Science and Engineering at City College of NY (M); Queens HS for the Sciences at York College; Staten Island T echnical HS. • All admission is based on the SHSAT which is scheduled for October 26, 27 at Hillcrest HS in Jamaica. Students with IEPs or 504s on Saturday, November 2 or Sunday, November 17 .

  13. PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATION • LaGuardia High School based on audition only – Dance, Instrumental Music, Fine Arts, Drama, T echnical Theater and Vocal Music. Audition dates are: • Last name A – Z -Saturday, November 16 – multiple studios or T echnical Theater; Last name A - K - Sunday, November 17 at 8:00 am – single studio; Last name L – Z – Sunday, November 17 at 11:30 am – single studio. • Admission tickets are issued by the school in mid- October.

  16. PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATION • 12 choices of programs are allowed on the public school application. • ORDER IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!! • Absences and tardiness and equally important. Most schools say excellent attendance record. • Check distance from the house; public transportation to and from the school; programs your child is interested in. • Six different selection processes.

PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATION • ZONED - Based on home address • UNSCREENED Random selection • LIMITED UNSCREENED - Random selection; Higher priority to students who sign in at a high school fair or at a school’s information session • SCREENED FOR LANGUAGE - Based on students’ English language skills and/or years in the country. • TEST - Offers are made based on score attained on the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) only.

PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATION • SCREENED - Rank students using seventh grade core course grades, attendance, and state test scores. – Additional requirements possible, such as portfolios or interviews. • AUDITION – Same as Screened, but require an audition. – Some auditions require pre-registration. • EDUCATIONAL OPTION – Seats reserved for students with high, medium, and low NY State ELA scores. – Half of seats filled by students who were ranked by the school. – Half of seats filled through random selection.

  19. PROGRAM CHOICES ON THE APPLICATION List programs in your true order of preference, starting with your top choice. High schools cannot see the order of programs on your child’s application . Students are considered for offers in the order of the programs on their application. If you don’t get into your first choice, then you are considered for the next choice. It’s as though the next choice is your new first choice. 19
