Why Prince Henry’s Sixth Form?

Changes to A levels

In the past, A Levels were divided into two parts each containing two units:

a)

the first set of two/three units made up the AS which was examined at the end of the first year of an A Level course (Year 12);

b)

the second set of two/three units made up the A2 which was examined at the end of the second year (Year 13). AS counted as 50% of the A2/A Level and attracted 50% of UCAS points for university entry.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Changes introduced from September 2015

  • AS and A Levels have been ‘decoupled’, this means that AS levels still

exist as a separate qualification but only count as 40% of a whole A level.

  • A full A level is a two year course taught in a linear fashion with almost

all of the assessment at the end of two years.

  • The expectation from universities and employers is that students will

have 3 full A levels at the end of Year 13.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Our Offer

  • Our main programme will consist of 3 A levels and a programme of

Enrichment

  • Universities make offers based upon 3 A level grades and the top

universities have said that they value higher grades over an additional subject

  • Exceptional students may be able to embark upon a 4 A level

programme in consultation with the Head of Sixth Form, if they have achieved at least 6 As at GCSE with an A* in the 4 subjects chosen

  • Further Maths will continue to run giving some students a fourth A

level option.

Ofsted 2013:

Teaching in the Sixth Form is outstanding. Teachers ensure that students understand key subject ideas in the level of depth that will enable them to achieve the higher grades. Students take responsibility for monitoring their own progress against personal targets and collaborate well in helping each other to achieve.

slide-14
SLIDE 14
